It started with brothers James and Thom Elliot making a six-week pilgrimage across Italy to find their Holy Grail pizza (in a Piaggo Ape van, of course, which became their first mobile kitchen on Berwick St Market). Fast forward a decade and Pizza Pilgrims is now famed for its authentic Neapolitan pizzas and has 20 bricks-and-mortar sites across the UK - the latest of which will, by the time you read this, have just opened its doors on Cambridge’s Sidney Street.

Spanning two storeys of the former Joshua Taylor building on the corner of Market Street, the restaurant has both an impressive dining area and a versatile games area too, housing a court for the classic Italian game Bocce - think a cross between English bowls and French pétanque - which can be hired for private events.

The hero of the menu is the Elliots’ signature slow-proved, wood-fired Neapolitan pizza: billed as “bready, chewy and flavoursome, with a hint of char. . . You can see why the Neapolitan Margherita is protected by UNESCO”, toppings span meaty (e.g. Double Pepperoni & Spicy Honey), veggie (Smokey Aubergine Parm, layered with mozzarella and parmesan) and vegan (pure veg Pizz’ & Love).

“We have always loved Cambridge as a location,” says Thom. “It’s such a vibrant place and some of the buildings are pretty sensational! We have been trying to find the right location for literally five years and, once we saw the Sidney Street site, we just had to get hold of it. “It has the most amazing double-height windows on the first floor and is such a beautiful space. It will really allow us to have some fun with the fit out to make somewhere really special to come and enjoy a pizza. Plus some room for a couple of creative surprises along the way. . .”
