Dead Mile by Jo Furniss (Bonnier £9.99) is a ‘locked room’ mystery with a difference. Set on a motorway known as the Dead Mile, which is just a mile away from an under-river tunnel, once you’re in that traffic system and it stops, you’re stuck.

Soon-to-retire Sergeant Belinda ‘Billy’ Kidd is driving home from the airport, jetlagged and ready to resign from a long and sort-of-honourable career. At 5pm, the traffic grinds to a halt as a newsreader excitedly explains that a bomb has exploded in the Deadwall Tunnel along with other explosions throughout London. Chaos ensures and the whole city is totally gridlocked. Billy, along with most of the other drivers and passengers, get out of their vehicles and begin to chat.

It’s 5.05pm when Billy and a fellow female driver discover the driver of a black sedan slumped behind the wheel. Billy, summoning up her ‘cop self’, discovers he’s dead. Calling over another passenger who said she was a nurse, the pair discover that it’s pretty obvious Black Car Man has been murdered.

Since nobody can escape from this monumental gridlocked jam, it stands to reason that the murderer must be amongst the group of people Billy is desperately trying to keep in order. In addition, the mobile lines are shut down because of the terrorist attacks. . . This read is terrific.
