Shopping: Buy a gift and support a good cause
Hidden Treasures, the new Burwell gift shop, aims to enliven the High Street, champion local craftspeople and support adults with disabilities
A gift shop, set up to show and sell the work of local craftspeople, has opened in Burwell. Called Hidden Treasures, it’s run by Burwell Print Centre, the charity which, founded by the community 32 years ago, runs a social enterprise design and print business, giving both training and support to adults with learning disabilities.
“Covid lockdowns and restrictions have been hard for the company and for the adults who use our services. Rather than focus on what we couldn’t do, we decided to try something different,” says manager Jo Graham-Thompson.
By opening up a new income stream - traders are charged a small rental fee and sales commission - “the shop can help not only Burwell Print but also local creative traders in the area such as artists and crafters,” continues Jo. “It will also give our adult learners an opportunity to spend more time working creatively on items which will be available to sell.”
Selling solely handmade wares makes Hidden Treasures unique, she adds. “‘Buy local’ has become a very popular phrase due to Covid and the need for local businesses and independent traders to come together will be the key to success for the future. We’re hoping that Hidden Treasures will help reinvigorate local trade in the village.”
Open Tuesday to Friday 10am-4pm and Saturday 10am-pm, Hidden Treasures is at 10a The Causeway, Burwell, Cambridge CB25 ODU. Follow @hiddentreasuresburwell on Facebook and @HiddenTreasures_Burwell on Instagram for updates.
