Diary Dates: Bonfire Night, a book fest and festive markets

From a Bonfire Night party to a festive French brocante, these are the autumn/winter events to get in your diary

Cambridge Literary Festival’s Winter Weekend
Described by festival director Cathy Moore as “a festive feast of words to warm the soul and stimulate the mind”, Cambridge Literary Festival’s Winter Weekend is set to close the event’s 20th year in star-studded style.

With a lineup of household-name speakers from the worlds of politics, food, television, sport, art, environment and wellbeing - from former PM Teresa May to actor Timothy West to chef Rick Stein to novelist Sebastian Faulks to poet Lemn Sissay - the programme runs from November 16 to 19 and tickets are booking now.
Top of our booking list? An audience with Grace Dent, Guardian restaurant critic and MasterChef UK regular, who’ll be talking about new book Comfort Eating, “a tour of the foods we turn to behind closed doors – often deeply personal, nostalgic, joyous, and topped with a healthy dollop of guilty pleasure”.

A chance to browse and buy everything from fine art prints, paintings and pottery to Buddha bowls and a Tarot card reading, the Makers’ Market is a new monthly fixture at Ely’s Old Dispensary.

With the next two dates set for September 30 and October 29, stalls are run solely by artists, designers and makers selling their own wares, so it’s also an opportunity to meet and chat to local creatives.

Bonfire Night & Christmas at Heydon’s King William IV
Clear your calendars: one of our favourite foodie destinations has announced a series of delicious autumn/winter events.
Heydon’s King William IV is hosting a Bonfire Night celebration on November 4, featuring hot chocolate, toffee apples, fireworks and a best-dressed-Guy competition.
Then, in December, there’s a winter craft fair (December 2), a party to mark the team’s first birthday (December 15) and a night of dinner and dancing (New Year’s Eve).

Boule-in Fête de Noël in Bildeston
Bringing the stock, sights, sounds and flavours of a classic French brocante to the Suffolk countryside, Bildeston’s seasonal Boule-in is always cue to clear the calendar. But the Christmas event - the nine-day Fête de Noël, running November 18 to 26 - is arguably the loveliest of the whole year.
