Homes: Quick wins to give your rooms a fresh feel

The start of a new year is a prompt to press reset - and one of the easiest and most impactful places to start is the home. Suffolk’s Sonya Mallet, aka Sonya the Home Stylist, shares her top tips

There are so many benefits to having a good sort out following the festive season. I’m sharing some simple tips you can follow in preparing your home as we welcome 2024, which will help keep your home organised throughout the year.
I’m a true advocate for the quote “tidy home equals tidy mind” and find when the house is organised, my mood improves significantly; as life starts to take over and things become less organised, I really do notice the change in the way I feel. So, the best way to manage this is to introduce regular steps to your everyday (or weekly) routine.

1: Declutter
The one task most people dread, however the key here is just to get started and start small! Something as simple as decluttering a cupboard or drawer is a great first step, which is both achievable and allows you to build on your success. These areas are quick wins for freeing up space.

2: Re-organise your wardrobe
The new year is a great time to review your wardrobe. With the party season coming to an end, consider having a look through and see if there is the opportunity to recycle any clothes you’ve not worn for a while.
Did you know if you’ve not worn something in the last 12 months, it’s unlikely you’ll be looking to wear that item any time soon? It may be time to find a new home for those pieces that have been hanging up in the back of your wardrobe for far too long.
There are so many ways to give your unloved items a new home, either by donating to your local charity shop, connecting with your local pre-loved store or selling on pre-loved sites such as Depop, Vinted or reThread.
Another great time to revisit your wardrobe is at the start of a new season. Storage boxes and vacuum-packed bags are a great way to store seasonal clothes.

3: Fragrances and fresh flowers
With the wide array of scented candles, wax melts and room sprays available on the market, there’s plenty of choice when it comes to adding a fresh fragrance to your home. Why not treat yourself to a bunch of flowers each month, the perfect choice for adding both a splash of colour and gorgeous natural fragrance to your home?

4: Time to redecorate
Now is the perfect time to think about redecorating. Although it’s hard to believe, as temperatures continue to drop and the sign of lighter evenings doesn’t look to be arriving anytime soon, spring is not that far away!
If you’re thinking about redecorating a room once the warmer weather arrives, you should be looking at getting your painter or decorator booked in now. Pick up some paint charts and prepare early, and think about what fresh new colour palette you’d like to introduce into your home.
If re-decorating isn’t on the agenda for this year, you can completely transform a room just by introducing a new colour to some home accessories.
