Christmas: This year's top decor trends

A symbolic reminder that winter’s dark days are not here to stay, we’ve been decorating our homes for Christmas since ancient times. This year’s top decor trends promise fairytale glitter, maximalist glam and natural beauty, as Alice Ryan reports

Good Nature

Reclaimed from the fashion scrapheap during the early days of the pandemic, amid a renewed sense of connection with both nature and our own homes, dried flowers and foliage feature heavily in this year’s Christmas decor schemes. Appearing not only in swags, wreaths and table centres but on trees too, structural seed heads and feathery grasses tucked between snow-dusted branches create a soft, boho beauty.

Party Nights

With maximalism continuing to trend - more has been more for several Christmases now - this scheme takes inspiration from the nightclub dancefloor: think bright colours, strobing lights, lots of glitter. Nobody does it better than the designers at John Lewis & Partners, who’ve taken the look to the next level by adding a range of retro music-themed baubles, including dinky 3D decks, cassettes and even a jukebox.

Fairy Kingdom

This year’s take on pastels is prettier than ever. Pairing soft champagne and powder pinks with brighter violets, warm coppers and light-refracting pearl and glitter finishes, it is fit for a fairytale. Another big trend which has carried over from Christmas 2021, personalise your tree with quirky shaped baubles on a sweet-treat theme - cakes, candy, ice cream sundaes. . .
