AD: How to make the most of outdoor space

Follow these simple-yet-effective steps and turn your outside space into a more relaxing place

So many of us don’t really use our outdoor space to the best of its potential. If you aren’t a gardener, and you don’t have too much interest in spending lots of time perfecting the look of your outdoor space, then you might let it go to waste. Fortunately, there are a lot of things you can do to make a more relaxing outdoor experience and create somewhere in your garden that is a nice environment to spend your time.

Create somewhere to sit or lie

You have so many different options when it comes to your outdoor seating (or even lying), from an outdoor chaise longue to a hammock, or a really simple table and chair set.

Make sure that wherever you choose to sit or lie down, you have a comfortable area. Some outdoor cushions can make all the difference, as the feel of the wood on an outdoor bench isn’t always the best place to relax for long periods of time.

If you really love spending time in the yard or enjoying the feel of the sun, you could add a lounger or a traditional hammock to your outdoor space, perfect for relaxing for long periods of time.

Make it easy to enjoy food and drink outdoors

One of the nicest ways to make use of your outdoor space is to use it as a place for eating and drinking. We don’t just mean barbecues either. A lot of people are installing a Nespresso machine or other coffee machine in an area near the garden, so you can easily make a quick coffee to enjoy in the yard.

Some people even manage to install Nespresso machines outdoors, if you have a power supply and access to water then it is relatively easy. If not, it isn’t too much of an inconvenience to bring a drink outside.

A drinks service or fridge outdoors can also be a way to enjoy food and drink outside. You can also create a nice seating area with a table that is a nice place to entertain guests or relax with a cup of coffee.

Think about the sun

Being able to control when you’re getting the sun is crucial for your relaxation. For instance, you don’t want too much sun all of the time, so it is great to have the option to sit and relax in a shaded area. If you want such a shaded area, a pergola or a gazebo can be the perfect outdoor space, and these can also protect appliances like your Nespresso machines or coolers from the elements.

Alternatively, you might want to turn your yard into a sun trap and ensure that all times when you can possibly get some sun in, you are doing so. This can help in those early mornings when it hasn’t got that warm out yet. You can still enjoy the sun beating down on your face and relax while getting all important Vitamin D.

Water features

Do you love the sound of a water feature? As well as looking great, a water feature’s trickle can help to create a really serene outdoor space for you to sit and relax. Be careful, it might even send you off to sleep!

There are a variety of different water features, and you can buy something that is totally self-contained, or make a bit more effort and create a bigger pond in your yard. This can be one of the best ways to encourage wildlife into your yard, too, which can further add to the excellent relaxing feel of a garden.

There is an amazing connection between humans and fire. Of course, you need to always make sure that you are practising fire safety, but with a little bit of precaution you can ensure that you have access to a fire pit or similar feature in your garden.

This helps you to keep it warm outside when the weather starts to get a bit cooler, but this isn’t the only benefit. For instance, did you know that studies have shown that sitting by a fire can lower your blood pressure and stress levels?

Scientists’ best theories about why this is include evolutionary leftovers, as fires have always been a safer place for humans where we have more light and heat. The crackle of the fire and the beautiful orange glow are satisfying for people to sit and relax.

While everyone has a slightly different idea of what relaxation looks like, there are many ways in which you can alter your outdoor space to control the light, the heat, and what sort of space you

have to sit and enjoy a coffee, a meal in the evening, or some drinks with friends. Why not make the most of your outdoor space?
