Health: Perfect your smile with Specialist Dental Partners
From regular check-ups to complex restorations, the experts at Specialist Dental Partners - now in Thriplow - offer the very best in private dentistry. Founder and clinical lead Myles Dakin, who heads up the friendly team, explains what inspires their exceptional service
When did Specialist Dental Partners launch and what attracted you to this area of work?
SDP’s origins date back to the late 1990s, when I moved from my private practice in Harley Street (I was also teaching at Guy’s Hospital at the time) to Royston, where I took over an existing practice. It wasn’t long before we then moved to Melbourn Science Park, where we remained until the start of this year; we’ve just relocated to Thriplow. I always felt that high-quality private care was disproportionately concentrated in the West End of London, and that there was no reason why that couldn’t exist elsewhere and be more easily accessible to more people.
What treatments do SDP specialise in and which tend to be the most popular?
To answer that question, I probably need to turn it on its head, as very often, rather than for a particular treatment, people come to us to get the best outcome for their teeth and it’s our job to work out how to get there. Often there are several routes, and it all depends on what’s right for the patient.
In terms of our technical expertise, SDP covers every major dental specialism, which means you may be referred to us by your regular dentist, but for many of our patients, we are also their general dentist. This means they come to us for their routine preventative care and maintenance, and if they do need some specific treatment, there is no need to be referred elsewhere.
We’ve spent many years building an expert team of internationally-trained clinicians to enable us to provide the best quality, joined-up approach to patient care, where each patient’s needs are understood and managed holistically. Drawing on a background in oral surgery and post- graduate training in the US, my own area of specialism is complex restorations and ‘rescue’ cases. I also see many patients for their day-to-day dental care.
It’s fantastic that you have a dedicated service for children; what’s the feedback like from children and parents?
We can’t stress strongly enough the importance of starting early. Our younger patients usually book in with Fiona, one of our dental therapists. They quickly learn that a visit to the dentist is nothing to be worried about and get the good habits embedded at a young age. As you might imagine, this goes down well with parents too!
As one of our two qualified dental therapists, Fiona has advanced training that enables her to provide a range of treatments from dental hygiene care to check-ups, fillings and more.
What do you think sets SDP apart in the dentistry world?
From the feedback we have from patients, we know it’s the end-to-end experience that makes a difference. Whether it’s the warm welcome from Lesley when you first arrive, or the comfortable, relaxed surroundings with music, art, good coffee and books while you wait, the great conversation with our nurses or the expert care and great listening skills of our clinicians, we hope to ease the process of going to the dentist, every step of the way.
This is the very best of private dentistry without having to go to London. Key to this is the ability to get an appointment within a short space of time. We deliberately manage our diary so that new patients are usually seen within two to three days, emergencies sooner than that, and most other appointments within the week.
You’ve just moved to Thriplow. We'd love to hear more about your exciting new clinic.
Yes! This is a really exciting chapter in our story. After more than 20 years on Melbourn Science Park, we’ve moved up the road to beautiful Thriplow: easy to get to, a little bit nearer to Cambridge, and famous for its daffodils! On Brook Road, in sight of the village church, our new clinic is a former dairy that underwent major refitting and refurbishment ready for us to move in.
We have four surgeries, a treatment room for additional therapies including osteopathy, waiting space both upstairs and down, and plenty of parking. It’s been so exciting watching it all come together.
