Fit Bits: Meet Emma Cuadrado who teaches all-round workout BarreConcept
Professional dancer Emma Cuadrado runs Cambridge Barre Workout, specialising in unique classes combining elements of Pilates, dance, yoga, resistance training and ballet
My fitness story
I have been working within the fitness industry for the past 10 years and started my own fitness business, Cambridge Barre Workout, in 2015. I initially started with group-only sessions but over the years, and from further training myself, I now offer online coaching, 1-2-1 sessions and an online on-demand platform, focusing on women’s health, perimenopause, menopause, pre and post-natal, and of course barre sessions.
What I teach
I specialise in BarreConcept, a unique workout which combines elements of Pilates, dance, yoga, resistance training and ballet in a highly effective workout performed at a ballet barre, with core work on a mat. Small isometric contractions are performed with an interval training approach that burns fat and improves cardiovascular fitness. Through this approach, your posture, flexibility, stamina and core strength improve and as a result the body is realigned, re-balanced and works harmoniously and efficiently. The effect is of a long lean dancer’s body without being a dancer.
Why I love my job
The thing I love most about my job is that I teach my clients how to be their strongest both mentally and physically. I enjoy helping clients in their everyday life through functional movement within a fun community.
My go-to quick workout
This has to be a weight session which is interval based and working the full body.
My favourite feel-good long workout
Hot yoga! Taking someone else’s class is so important and to escape within yoga is magical.
The energy-boosting snack I swear by
Boiled eggs! I love them and they are easy to add to most meals. They are packed full of goodness, including Vitamin B and protein, which are essential in supporting energy, heart health, hormones, muscles repair and growth.
My indulgent treat food
That has to be chocolate! At the moment my favourite is definitely Tony’s Chocolonely!
How I kick back and relax
Reading a good book, as that’s something which supports my busy mind. Thrillers are my particular favourite.
My top tip for anyone who needs motivating to start exercising
Make it simple! Movement doesn’t have to take hours out of your day. Head out for walks, join a community, have a kitchen party, but know that motivation will come and go; it’s the habits that will stick. Make them simple and make movement enjoyable.
