This slice of history will feed your love of all things sweet
It’s 100 years since Frederick Belmont, an orphaned Swiss baker and confectioner who came to England to seek his fortune, opened the first Bettys in Harrogate.
The brand, which now has six tea rooms, a bakery and cookery school in its native Yorkshire, has become famous for its festive mail-order delicacies, with the mince pies alone notching up numerous taste-test wins.
If you’re lacking time (or, indeed, inclination) to bake your own Christmas cake, this Soft Iced Star is a shoo-in: a richly fruited cake topped with marzipan, soft icing and an intricate gilded star, we think it’s £30 well spent.
