Food News: New venues, new menus, a collab and a festival
New restaurants, coffee shops, a collab and a food festival come to Cambridge, Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds
Summer Food Festival, Newmarket
Good news for foodies: a chance to try, buy and learn about a wide range of artisanal products, Newmarket is hosting a summer Food Festival. With stalls filling The Guineas shopping centre for three days, July 26 to 28, the Saturday will also see a celebration of food, drink and live music in the adjoining Market Square.
A collaboration between The Guineas, Newmarket Market and Love Newmarket, the event is sponsored by Weston Group and The Tack Room, the restaurant at the town’s National Horseracing Museum.

TACOR, Bury St Edmunds
With a menu spanning ‘sexy specials’ and ‘slutty sides’, Hannah Gregory’s Bury St Edmunds taqueria - TACOR, housed in the old PizzaShed site at The Beerhouse on Tayfen Road - is now open!
Says Hannah, MasterChef quarter-finalist and Velvet’s resident recipe writer: “It’s your local neighbourhood taqueria: stripped back, authentic, no pretence - just good solid tacos”. TACOR launched with the support of a target-smashing Kickstarter.

Bean Theory, Waresley Park Estate
It only opened in Newnham last summer, but Bean Theory’s “comfortable, quirky coffee house” has already proved such a hit, it’s expanding to a second site - at Sandy’s picturesque Waresley Park Estate.
Continuing to focus on serving only the finest coffee, made from Hone beans roasted on-site, Bean Theory at Waresley is poised to open for brunch, lunch and all-day cakes, snacks and drinks.
There’s a local food focus, with eggs coming from nearby Wood Farm, bakery goods from Woods Bakery and meat from Woodview Farm Shop in Gamlingay, and the menu will feature Bean Theory’s signatures, including its legendary cheese-pull toasties and loaded fries.

Parker’s Tavern, Cambridge
Parker’s Tavern, the restaurant at Cambridge’s historic University Arms, has welcomed a new executive chef. Having trained with Marco Pierre White and been mentored by the late Albert Roux, Lee Clarke has won both Michelin Guide acclaim and multiple AA Rosettes for his two previous solo ventures, Clarkes and Prévost, and now opens “a new culinary chapter” at the city-central hotel.

The Angel Hotel, Bury St Edmunds
It’s the perfect double-act: Theatre Royal, Bury’s precious Regency playhouse, has announced a partnership with The Angel Hotel, the town’s historic former coaching inn frequented by Charles Dickens.
Now official restaurant partner to the theatre, The Angel’s Eaterie is offering audiences an Early Evening Express menu, comprising three courses and a cocktail for £35 per person, 5-6pm Monday to Friday, and à la carte dining with a complimentary glass of fizz on Saturdays and Sundays.
