Food news: Cambridge’s newest restaurant, Flat Iron, is giving away 300 Wagyu steaks!
Known for serving exception steaks at affordable prices, Flat Iron opens its first restaurant outside London, on Cambridge’s Market Street today (July 24).
Founded in 2012, by Charlie Carroll, whose mission is ‘to make remarkable steak available to everyone’, Flat Iron is celebrating its Cambridge launch, by giving away 300 of its signature Wagyu steaks.
Pop along from 5.30pm on Wednesday, July 26, when the specialist steaks – sourced from farmers at Warrendale Wagyu in Yorkshire, the UK’s number one provider of British Wagyu – will be given away on a first come, first served basis. Yes, really!
Velvet visited the two-floor Cambridge restaurant, housed in an elegant Victorian building, for a tasting and can report that the Wagyu – which combine rich marbling with the robust flavour of grass-fed British beef – are melt-in-the-mouth delicious!
We also enjoyed the signature ‘Flat Iron’ steak, which comes served ready sliced on a wooden board, drizzled in sea salt, and accompanied by your own mini wooden-handed cleaver in place of a steak knife (nice touch!), and a choice of sauces (we recommend the bearnaise).
The sides include homemade beef dripping chips (seriously good), crispy bone marrow garlic mash and truffled macaroni cheese, though our favourites were the creamed spinach (divinely rich) and the roast aubergine, tomato, basil and mozzarella.
The 120-cover Cambridge restaurant, which has been beautifully restored, featuring timber floors, exposed bricks and orb pendant lights, offers a rotating board of specials including a new bearnaise cheeseburger, Scottish bavette, Flat Iron sirloin and, on weekends, British Wagyu.
The meat is top-notch, of course, sourced from Flat Iron’s own herd in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, alongside a series of outstanding UK-based producers. There is also an array of cocktails, an impressive wine and beer list, plus fruity soft options, including Lime & Mint or Almond & Lime House Fizzes. Pop along for a slice of British beef at its best.
