Food: Kebabs, curries and cakes at Rambling Rose
Spanning everything from coffee, cake, sausage rolls and soup of the day to curry and kebabs, Ixworth’s Rambling Rose Coffee House & Bistro has launched an expanded take-out and delivery menu. Offering free doorstep drop-off within a three-mile radius of the village and within seven miles - encompassing Bury - for orders over £50, the service has proved a huge hit already: authentic Turkish kebabs, head chef Sinan’s signature dish, are a regular sell-out, while the afternoon tea, originally a VE Day special, has become a Sunday fixture.
Rambling Rose opened in February, in memory of long-term resident Beryl Rose. Run by her grandchildren, Ben and Emma Lord, and their parents Glenda and Peter. Beryl and her sister Edna were both fans of CB radio, the short-distance, person-to-person Citizens’ Band, and the business takes its name from her radio callsign, Rambling Rose; Edna was Calamity Jane.
Says Ben: “The idea to call it Rambling Rose was my sister’s. My nan and great aunt Edna were very well-known village girls and nan loved anything coffee flavoured.”
The premises, on Ixworth High Street, had housed a coffee shop before. “When it closed a year ago the village felt its impact as it had attracted a good footfall,” continues Ben, adding that the family see Rambling Rose as “an opportunity to rejuvenate the High Street.”
* The Rambling Rose takeaway and delivery service runs from 4pm Monday to Saturday and noon to 5pm on Sundays.
