Food: Gourmet dinner kits to the door? Get Prepped

Inspired by his years of commuting to London, coming home late, tired and craving a home-cooked meal, Simon Crosbie devised Prepped to deliver restaurant-level dinner kits to your door.

With his co-founders, Steven Mann and Emma Duggan, he’d planned to operate Prepped from a pair of station sites, Cambridge and Audley End, so commuters could pick up a kit, pre-paid via app, on their way home. When coronavirus threw a spanner in the works, they swiftly switched to the home-delivery model.

With provenance and seasonality of ingredients key, the core Prepped offering is meal kits, “restaurant level dishes that we prepare and do all the hard work for, so they take 20-30 minutes to pull together at home,” explains Simon. “A good example is the slow-roasted pork belly with chorizo and cider cream: we’ve slow-roasted the pork belly for four to five hours, so it then takes 20 minutes max to get ready.”

Ready meals, such as fish pie and aubergine parmigiana, are also available, as are roast dinner kits, complete with joint, trimmings and dessert. Based in a commercial kitchen on Cambridge’s Coldhams Lane, Prepped delivers within a five-mile radius of the city on Thursdays and Saturdays, and in Saffron Walden area on Saturdays, too.
