Food: From lockdown hobby to luxe baking business
With top sellers including Galaxy Cookie Dough Millionaire Slices, Malteaser Brownies and Kinder Bueno Blondies, what started as a lockdown hobby for Jemma Page and Will Hodge has turned into a booming business: Cambridge Luxury Bakes.
Specialising in traybakes and fridge cakes, from brownie, blondie and shortbread slices to rocky roads and krispie cakes, the couple already has a regular Friday and Saturday stall on the city’s central market, monthly pop-ups in Northstowe Green and Trumpington Meadows, and an in-demand web shop, which sees them send postal treat boxes across the country.
Furloughed from their jobs in catering equipment sales and nightclub management respectively, couple Jemma and Will started making cakey care packages for friends and family.
“People started asking to buy things from us and we weren’t keen at first as it was just a hobby,” she explains. “Then one night we decided to launch a website - and we sold more than 100 bake boxes in our first week!”
