Local heroes: how The Chestnut Group is helping feed the NHS
East Anglian hospitality group Chestnut has joined forces with Food4Heroes to provide fresh, nutritious meals for our amazing frontline NHS key workers.
Chestnut - which has local eateries including The Packhorse Inn, Moulton, The Eight Bells, Saffron Walden, The Northgate, Bury St Edmunds and The Rupert Brooke, Grantchester, in its portfolio - stepped in to help after recognising the exhausting demands placed on NHS staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The not for profit initiative will provide 300 free meals per week – cooked by experienced chefs - to hard-working NHS employees at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital CCU. More meals and hospitals will be added as funding increases.
Philip Turner, founder of Chestnut, says: “We are absolutely delighted to be working in partnership with Food4Heroes. We have been inspired by many heart-warming initiatives across the UK and as East Anglia is our heartland, it makes complete sense to support our local front-line teams as best we can. There has already been some great response by businesses and local people in the region. I would particularly like to thank both Hopkins Homes and Birketts for their very generous donations.”
Food4Heroes is a national scheme, launched in response to the heart-rending online appeal by NHS worker, Dawn Bilborough, who was distraught after finishing a 48-hour shift and being unable to buy food in her local supermarket.
By the end of April, Food4Heroes will have delivered more than 60,000 meals to 12 hospitals in England.
If you’re wondering how you can help this brilliant scheme be rolled out further, you can donate to the ‘Giving Tree’, a newly-established arm of Chestnut, dedicated entirely to supporting local communities with not for profit initiatives.
Donations to Giving Tree will support the team in buying local produce, which will then be turned into delicious meals, packaged and delivered directly to Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital (whilst adhering to social distancing advice). As the scheme is operated entirely by volunteers, every penny goes towards the fresh meals for front-line staff.
