Food: Could these be Cambridge's best doughnuts?
Chin Chin Bakery has just arrived in Cambridge - bringing brownies, burnt Basque cheesecake and the freshest, fluffiest filled doughnuts. . .
With signature bakes including brownies, burnt Basque cheesecake and the freshest, fluffiest doughnuts filled with flavoured custards - vanilla, chai, cereal milk - Chin Chin Bakery has arrived in Cambridge.
Relocating from London, where she ran a deli in East London, to find a better work/family life balance, Peichin Lee says she “chose Cambridge as it is a cosmopolitan city that has a great education environment - and a perfect new market for my bakes”.
Raised within a family restaurant business in 1980s Taiwan, cooking is in Peichin’s blood, yet she came to the UK first to study and then work in fashion. “I did not start baking until my first child was diagnosed with a dairy allergy in 2013,” she explains, “and my baking level was basic until I had the opportunity to start my first delicatessen in 2016.
“With the positive response of the customers, I started venturing out of my comfort zone and baked with more challenging recipes and new techniques until I could not part with baking. I know at heart, the kitchen is my happy place.”
Aiming to create a social enterprise, “where the business and social responsibility meet under one roof”, Peichin offers delivery within a wide range of CB postcodes - find a full list on her website - with mixed boxes of six doughnuts, two each of three flavours, priced £24, and whole baked cheesecakes, which serve six to eight, from £28.
She also caters private events, from weddings to corporates, and makes celebration cakes and bakes to order. Adds Peichin: “The moment someone takes a bite of my bakes, and exhales with happiness, that brings me the ultimate joy.”
