Food: Coronation specials on the menu in Cambridge and Bury

What better way to mark this month’s Coronation of King Charles III than with a celebratory meal? Happily, venues across our area are planning themed specials for Coronation week. Here’s what’s on the menu. . .

Gastrono-me, the all-day eatery on Bury’s Abbeygate Street, has created Ring for the King, described as “a toasted seeded bagel layered with crispy bhajis, sliced radishes and cucumber, fresh garden leaves topped off with our delicately spiced creamy Coronation chicken (May 1 to 8).

Garden House, the restaurant at riverside hotel Graduate Cambridge, is offering a special afternoon tea, complete with classic finger sandwiches (smoked salmon and horseradish butter, cucumber and cream cheese), scones with jam and clotted cream, a selection of cakes (Victoria sponge, Cambridge Burnt Cream tart) and choice of Canton Teas (launching May 6 and running all month).

Guests at Newmarket’s Bedford Lodge Hotel can also book a celebratory afternoon tea, incorporating some of His Majesty’s own favourites and giving a culinary nod to English, Irish and Welsh tea traditions (May 3 to 7), plus the onsite restaurant, Squires, is hosting a King’s Coronation Sunday Lunch: billed as a three-course banquet, highlights will include a traditional smoked mackerel pate with a jersey royal potato salad and roast sirloin of beef with potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and red wine jus (May 7).

Cambridge bakery Fitzbillies is offering to deliver a themed afternoon tea direct to your door. Each containing freshly baked sultana scones, raspberry jam and clotted cream, a box of red, white chocolate and blue macarons and a selection of other sweet treats, the boxes range in size from tea for two to a tea party for six guests (orders taken from April 14, nationwide delivery).
