Food: Bubb's makes Newmarket a sweeter place
Newmarket confectionery company Bubb's Sweet Treats has just celebrated its first birthday. Velvet gets a sugar rush
“Who doesn’t love a bag of pick n mix?” That’s the thinking behind Newmarket’s newest confectionery company, Bubb’s Sweet Treats. With an online shop stocked with everything from old-school jellies and fizzies to veggie, vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free versions, it sells sweets by the candy-striped paper bag, box, bottle and jar (the latter ranging in size from small right through to Beast and Colossal). A sweetie cart service is now booking for special events, too.
Starting out during the first 2020 lockdown, with a £500 budget for courses, stock and kit, Bubb’s is the brainchild of Harry and Shannon Bubb who’d noticed a growing demand for both retro British and unusual American and European confectionery.
“We took our products to Facebook at the end of May last year and that first weekend alone we were overwhelmed by the response; we were in complete shock,” says Harry. “The support from friends, family and the community is something we’re really grateful for.”
Both the Bubbs have day jobs - he’s a teaching assistant and swimming instructor and she’s a trainee nurse - but wanted a joint side-hustle which would give joy both to them and the wider community. Since launch last May, Bubb’s has raised £720 for local sports initiatives and £350 for dementia and aplastic anaemia support charities, plus donating £2,000 worth of presents to frontline workers at Christmas. “In our ‘day jobs’ we see first-hand the positive effects of giving back and the joy it brings to people,” Harry explains.
“We definitely have sweet teeth,” he adds. “Shannon’s weakness is fizzy blueberry and raspberry bottles. My guilty pleasure is chocolate, though I do love a fizzy peach!”
Prices start at £2.50 for a 150g letterbox selection; the Colossal jar, which weighs in at a whopping 3kg, is £25. A party bag service is also available. See bubbssweettreats.co.uk
