Dining Out: Alfresco pizza is on Lucy's menu
With hopes for an Indian summer high, Lucy’s, the Italian restaurant loved for its signature sourdough pizzas, has just opened an outdoor dining area - a suntrap of a garden. “Our new pizza menu was created to be enjoyed alfresco with a bottle of wine,” says founder Lucy Davis, “and now I feel we’ve created the perfect environment for that in the garden.”
Lucy opened the eaterie in Fornham All Saints at the start of the year, in partnership with South African chef Francois Pretorius. Meeting at Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland, the pair swiftly discovered a shared passion for Italian food, and a shared ambition to open their own restaurant.
Specialising in sourdough pizza, handmade pasta and seafood, Lucy’s, described as a ‘casual dining’ venue, had only been open for three months but was fully booked when lockdown hit. By the same night, Lucy and Francois had pivoted to a takeaway service.
“We have so many customers that really are passionate about our pizza and order religiously every week,” continues Lucy. “It seems that even though we were only open for such a short time before lockdown, we managed to get a great reputation just in time to help us survive. With us being such a small and new business we are so grateful for everyone’s support and custom.”
Not yet comfortable with serving dine-in meals, opening an outdoor eating area was a logical next step, says Lucy. “Customers can pre-order their pizza and drinks online as usual, then collect it at their time slot and enjoy it in the garden,” she explains. “It was a huge project but we knew we had to do it as soon as possible. It’s proved to be a huge hit already and we have been extremely lucky with the glorious weather.”
