Cambridge Foodies: Five top Cambridge curry houses

Having run The Cambridge Curry Community for more than a decade, Cambridge Foodies founder Simon Tompkins is an Indian restaurant aficionado. This month, he spotlights five of our area’s best

Spring is here and after a very depressing winter, I know we are all keen to warm up as quickly as possible. I can think of no better way than going for a curry!

I have been running The Cambridge Curry Community Facebook group for 12 years now and have learned which Indian restaurants offer not only the most exciting, but also the most consistent dining experiences in Cambridgeshire.

Cambridge has always punched well above its weight when it comes to Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine, so to save you missing out on some of the most inspiring experiences, here are my top five essential Indian restaurants. . .

The Taj Tandoori

In terms of atmosphere, the Taj Tandoori is unparalleled. Jools and Amin have thrown everything but the kitchen sink into refurbishing this restaurant into an warm and inclusive dining experience. Open since 1986, the Taj Tandoori is one of the oldest Bangladeshi restaurants still serving in Cambridge and offers not only the usual classic dishes associated with Bangladeshi cuisine but also a concoction of innovative fusion dishes - such as their infamous Shamee Burgers and Popcorn Daal. It is BYOB too, which makes it great value.

Make sure you try: The Shamee Burger or - if you are feeling brave – the (in)famous Bengal Tiger!

Cam Spice

Located in Great Eversden, Cam Spice has established itself as one of the most consistent and popular Indian restaurants in The Cambridge Curry Community. I don’t think I have ever heard a bad word uttered about this restaurant and everything from the presentation to the customer service is simply excellent. Fitted with a stunning waterfall bar, Cam Spice charms everyone who visits with its historic yet modern contrast. No matter what you order on the menu, Russel and the team will always impress and miraculously remember what you had from your last visit!

Make sure you try: Their Lamb Tawa.

The Banana Leaf

Sitting at the Mitcham’s Corner end of Milton Road, The Banana Leaf is one of the few places in Cambridge offering traditional Sri Lankan cuisine, and executes it perfectly. The restaurant’s interior will not blow you away with super-modern contemporary decor like some of the other restaurants, but it will win you over with its authentic food, generous portions, and a selection of dishes you will struggle to find anywhere else. Quite simply, it’s all about the food.

Make sure you try: Their Masala Dosa or Lamb Biriyani.

Mo Malik’s

The hottest Indian restaurant in Cambridge right now is Mo Malik’s. Relatively new to the scene, Mo Malik’s has taken Cambridge by storm, winning our latest community poll by a wide margin. This is the people’s Indian. Located just off the A14, its accessible for everyone and has been getting rave reviews. The food here is absolutely fantastic and the passion the team have for what they do is simply incredible. Book a visit to the restaurant everyone is talking about... you won’t regret it!

Make sure you try: Mo Malik's Meat Balls, an Italian twist on Indian cuisine.

Situated in the village of Bourn just west of Cambridge, the Lalbagh is a visually stunning contemporary family-run restaurant which has won countless awards. If you are a fan of Indian beer then you are spoiled for choice with a selection of Kingfisher, Cobra and Mongoose all on tap. The Lalbagh particularly stands out with their attention to detail on even the smallest of things, like meeting you at the door to greet you in and the sea bass specials which are presented on fish-shaped dishes, which all build up into a perfect dining experience. Their sea bass dishes are to die for.

Make sure you try: The Lalbagh Rhubarb Sea Bass.
