Timeless Style: Javelin @ 30

By Alice Ryan

Raise your glasses: Javelin, the independent boutique with branches in both Bury and Sudbury, turns 30 this month. Velvet’s Rohiny Belani, contributing fashion editor, showcases the brand’s stunning AW19 collection

When mornings are brisk, afternoons are still warm and by the time you leave work, you are kicking yourself for not bringing a warmer coat, you are in the timezone for autumn trends - and there’s no better place to go than Javelin for a wardrobe reboot. It is no mean feat to complete 30 years as an independent boutique and, in tribute to this great accomplishment, I’ve put the spotlight on some key trends currently on Javelin’s rails.

Dresses

One of my favourite elements of autumn fashion is the colour palettes that designers play around with - I love this year’s golden hues and midnight blues. Invest in a midi dress that can take you from autumn right through to spring, plus a full-length dress is a must-have for party season. When the temperatures inevitably drop, you can wear both with boots and thermals, still looking chic but keeping yourself cosy.

Knits

Cosy and chunky knits are a key component of the autumn/winter wardrobe. While it is important to stay warm, there is no excuse for not doing so in style! Match your knitwear with a cute beret, or jazz up the look with some fancy boots.

Coats

Nothing sets the sartorial tone for A/W like a striking coat. If you are one for being warm and fuzzy, investing in a teddy-style coat is a great idea. If you’re feeling little more adventurous, though, follow this year’s colour-block trend, pairing mustard with shades of grey. Team with black pants or leggings and a simple roll-neck knit.

Co-ords

The co-ordinated look is here to stay. If you’re a fan, a designer to watch out for is Fabienne Chapot. While she literally wears her heart on her sleeve, she also believes that her clothes symbolise a bold and chic woman. Pair trainers for the day and black boots for cocktail hour.

On Location

These pictures were shot at - and are reproduced by kind permission of - two iconic Cambridge locations: Queens’ College and the University Arms Hotel, part of the Autograph Collection and winner of ttgluxury’s best new luxury hotel. The University Arms “brings a new name to luxury accommodation in the heart of the city of Cambridge,” says Rohiny, explaining what drew her to the location. “With rooms that have a view of the beautiful Parker’s Piece, where many scholars have studied under the trees, the hotel not only lives up to its name by providing books in each room, but also has a separate library/bar corner where you can enjoy reading coupled with a drink and look out on the surrounding green space, giving you all the elements and feel of the magnificent university town of Cambridge.”
