Sustainable Diva: Meet our new beauty columnist, Caroline S. Asante

Promising “to help increase your low impact-lifestyle with sassy style, attitude, colour and beauty that won’t feed the landfill beast”, we’re delighted to welcome Caroline S. Asante - aka Sustainable Diva - as Velvet’s new columnist. This month: five products to kick-start your clean beauty routine

Kjaer Weis Lip Gloss, free from petroleum, parabens, silicone and gluten, £29,

Enriched with hydrating castor and rosehip seed oils, former make-up artist Kirsten Kjaer Weis’ Shiny Lip Gloss is the perfect winter lip moisturiser to achieve a naturally radiant pout. Available in eight beautiful shades, and enriched with Vitamin C, I love the peachy tone of Affinity. The formula glides on easily without the typical stickiness of other glosses, which end up catching strands of your hair!

Funky Soap London LEA Perfume Balm, 100% natural, handmade, vegan, non-toxic and in a plastic-free container, £7.10,

I’ve been looking for a solid perfume bar forever. Luckily, I came across this solid perfume by the Funky Soap Company, an all-female led brand which produces these amazingly fragrant and sustainable perfumes in small batches from their studio workshop in East London. Made from 100% natural ingredients, using essential oils and butters, Funky Soap Company also produces a delicious-smelling range of handmade soaps, solid shampoos and skincare products. Try their solid perfume LEA with jasmine, grapefruit and roses and add magic to your day.

Lumity 4-in-1 Cleanser, 100% natural, vegan, cruelty and toxin-free, £55 for a one-off order (£48 on subscription),

After the festive season and the cold January winds, your skin will definitely need more hydration and a pick-me-up. Harnessing the benefits of 31 nutrient-rich botanical ingredients, including activated bamboo, charcoal, green tea and a blend of essential oils, Lumity 4-in-1 Cleanser is a multi-tasking skincare essential. Developed by Cambridge skin scientist Sara Palmer Hussey PhD, this cleanser can also be used as a hydrating and revitalising mask treatment and has become a celebrity favourite. Dewiness restored.

White Rabbit Skincare Lime & Coconut Cleansing Water, £12 for 30ml or £30 for 200ml,

Change your wet wipe consumption habit and try White Rabbit Skincare’s Lime & Coconut Cleansing Water to remove make-up. Around 11 billion wet wipes are consumed in the UK each year. Disposable wipes are clogging our sewers up and down the country when wrongfully flushed, and drift as debris into streams, rivers and eventually the ocean. Floating pieces of wet wipes resemble plankton and are mistaken for food to fish. Wet wipes contain up to 90% plastic materials, therefore do not rot in landfills.

Make Your Own: Cruelty-free Lux Butter Bars

These low-impact and natural lux butter bars containing only two plant-based ingredients are economical, quick and easy to make and deeply moisturising. Suitable for dry skin.

To make eight to 10 bars, take 200g of cocoa butter and the same of shea butter. In a double boiler, gently melt the butters together. Remove from the heat, pour the liquid into moulds of your choice, and leave for three to four minutes to cool. Place the moulds in the fridge for two hours; once solid, they will pop out easily.
