Sustainable Diva: The best botanical scents
To mark the start of spring, Caroline S. Asante - Velvet’s eco fashion, beauty and lifestyle columnist - spotlights the best botanical scents
Botanical perfumery has a rich and ancient history. The art of blending plants, flowers, seeds, fruits and natural essences into beautiful, aromatic compositions dates back thousands of years to ancient Persia, Arabia and Egypt amongst others.
The Mesopotamian civilization and region are recorded as the earliest perfume-makers. In that region, a woman named Tapputi is noted in a Cuneiform tablet, dating from the second millennium BC, as the first recorded chemist and perfume maker.
Today, botanical fragrances are more popular than ever as our environmental awareness and consumption habits embrace the philosophies of clean beauty, ethical and sustainable products.
