Style.Devine: The top Nineties trends to wear now

“As trends come back around, it’s less about strict rules and more about making them your own. . .” Cambridge-based stylist Maggie Devine enlists niece Maggie Inman to explore the new wave of fashion nostalgia - and how to wear it well

Do we dig out our chunky jewellery and layer denim shorts over tights like we proudly did in the 2000s? Or do we leave those relics in the past and opt for a modern twist?
As a stylist, I’ve seen trends cycle in and out, but there’s something surreal about watching Gen Z embrace pieces I once wore as a teenager. It’s a fine line between nostalgic revival and trend-hopping and let’s be honest, some trends are better left untouched.
So, to help us navigate the fashion déjà vu and figure out which styles we can confidently reclaim, I’ve enlisted the help of my ever-fashionable niece, Maggie Inman - I know: another Maggie! She’s breaking down the top five trends that seamlessly bridge the gap between Gen Z and Millennials, so we’ll know exactly what to pull down from the attic (fingers crossed they still fit). . .

Denim-on-Denim: The Spring Girl Formula: It’s been ignored, celebrated, and now, somehow, it’s back! The classic denim-on-denim look is once again trending! But before you get flashbacks to the early 2000s, I’m here to help you style this trend and wear it comfortably. The trick is all in the contrast. A fitted denim jacket paired with relaxed denim jeans creates balance, keeping the outfit fresh and modern with a hint of nostalgia. The colour contrast in the denim can also have a big impact. To avoid the dreaded denim jumpsuit look, I suggest maintaining casual white underlayers to add simplicity without overwhelming the outfit. If you’re still hesitant, start small; a denim bag or even denim accessories can ease you into the trend without full commitment.

Leopard Print: The Right Kind of Drama: Leopard print has always been a Millennial love-it-or-hate-it trend; once again Gen Z has brought it back. Leopard print works best as a statement not a uniform. If you’re making the choice to wear it, everything else should be toned down, think neutral colours. In my opinion, less is more when it comes to the bold design of leopard print. Wear the pattern - don’t let it wear you.

Denim Skirt and Tights: A Blast from the 2000s: That’s right! In the past few weeks, Kate Moss’s iconic 2008 festival outfit has made a comeback, and in my opinion, it’s even better this time around. Sheer black tights (including lace or patterned ones) keep you warm while giving you the chance to unbox your traditional denim skirt.
So, bring your summer clothes back out of the wardrobe — you now have the perfect excuse to wear them in spring! Style your new look with a black oversized blazer or jacket, throw on a pair of boots, and you’ll look effortlessly trendy.

Gilets: The Unexpected Must-Have: I’ll admit it, this was an unexpected trend for me too. Yet in the last month, the 2014 gilet has been incorporated into Gen Z’s lifestyle. This style is all about proportion. If the gilet is sleek, contrast it with the rest of your look by pairing it with your favourite hoodie and wide-leg jeans. Gilets come in a variety of styles whether you prefer fleece, quilted, tweed, or a specific colour. One thing’s for sure, everyone should have one in their wardrobe.

Chunky Jewellery: Because Subtle Is Overrated: Gen Z is all about ‘going big’ and jewellery is the perfect way to do it! Your choice of rings, earrings, and necklaces is a fabulous way to express yourself; it tells a story and showcases your personality. Whether you choose to coordinate colours or mix them, one of the first impressions people get of you is through your appearance. And what better first impression than your jewellery? Play with stacking, designs, brands and don’t be afraid to overdo it. For those easing back into statement jewellery, I suggest starting with one bold piece, think a gold cuff or a pair of chunky hoops. And if you ever feel like it’s too much, it’s probably just right!
