After 18 months spent largely in loungewear on the sofa, who could resist getting dressed to the nines for a day celebrating the Sport of Kings? The Autumn Style Awards is returning to Newmarket’s Dubai Future Champions Festival on October 8 - live and in person, after the pandemic pressed pause on last year’s event - and we couldn’t be readier for it. . .

“The Style Awards will be taking place on Festival Friday,” explains Velvet editor Alice Ryan, long-time judge for the best-dressed competition. “I think the atmosphere is going to be amazing: for one thing, it’s the first day of the Dubai Future Champions meeting, with some thrilling races on the card; for another, I think everyone is jumping at the opportunity to get dressed up, go out and have a good day!”

In the past, the best-dressed event at the autumn meeting has been open to ladies only; this year, for the first time, the Autumn Style Awards are open to all, with judges looking for the most stylish racegoer on the course.

“While there’s a different feeling to autumn race-day dressing compared to summer - we expect to see a warmer palette and more layered looks - the same advice applies,” adds Alice.

“Think top-to-toe: we’ve seen many looks over the years that stop either at the ankle or the neck. Don’t be a slave to fashion - celebrate your personal style - but give a nod to the season’s trends. Wear something that not only looks good, but feels good, too: it’s hard to look fabulous if your shoes are giving you blisters!”

Along with a podium place, there are, as ever, fabulous prizes to be won - and Velvet will give each of the top 20 best-dressed a luxury goodie bag, containing everything from a chocolate bouquet from Camrbidge’s Chococolat Chococolat and artisan confectionery from The Fudge Can in St Neots to wine, home fragrance and pamper products: everything you need for a cosy autumn evening in.

“There are so many reasons to enter, but the number one has to be the fact the Style Awards are such good fun,” adds Alice. “So start planning that outfit - and we’ll see you there. . .”
