Objects of Desire
Newmarket boutique D’ORO unveils its first ready-to-wear collection this month. New from British label Edward Mongzar, each piece is a work of wearable art, as Alice Ryan discovers
Walk into D’ORO, the Newmarket boutique known for its edit of one-off vintage and preloved pieces, and there’s a surprise in store: as of this month, it’s stocking a small and exquisitely formed collection of ready-to-wear.
Named after its founder - Edward Mongzar, a designer whose signature is artfully hand-marbled silk - the label spans both dresses and separates. Thanks to the marbling, each item is unique. Simple silhouettes, vintage detailing and the prettiest of pastel shades combine for SS19, producing a collection both delicate and delicious.
“What drew us to the collection was the uniqueness and craftsmanship of each piece,” explains Naz Jackson, who runs D’ORO with friend and fellow fashion-lover Benjamin Christensen. “No two items are exactly alike.”
“With its vintage style and sumptuous quality, it felt like a natural step forward for us - it ties back to D’ORO’s roots,” adds Benjamin. “It's great to be able to offer something new and exclusive for clients that are not necessarily crazy about vintage or preloved items, but want something different that just can’t be found anywhere else on the High Street.”
Titled Marble Haze, the spring/summer collection is inspired by “the spirit of summer,” say the team at Edward Mongzar. Mongzar hand-marbled all 100 metres of fabric used in the designs himself, the explain, aiming “to capture the subtle nuances and ethereal flow of the colour swirling on the water”, creating patterns both “free and gentle”.
An ethically conscious label, committed to sustainable practice, Edward Mongzar used less than 25 litres of recycled water and no electricity in the production of the fabric for Marble Haze, with each length allowed to dry naturally in the sun.
All the items showcased on these pages will be available in D’ORO this month, but Naz and Benjamin have ordered no more than three of each. Because the collection is so small, there’s no reordering, “so once they’re gone, they’re gone,” adds Naz.
“The gentle swirls of the marbling, juxtaposed with the unpredictability of the dye, represent Edward’s belief that womenswear should be soft and gentle, as well as freeing and liberating,” say the Edward Monzar team. “He views the marbling process as a representation of the ideal 'live and let live', with the water and dye acting independently but coming together to create something beautiful.”
