Jockey Hayley Turner turns heads for Ladies' Day
When you’re putting together your Ladies’ Day look, give your headwear some extra thought: for the first time this year, a Milliner’s Award will be presented for best hat.
Running alongside the always hotly-contested Best Dressed Lady competition on day one of Newmarket’s Moët & Chandon July Festival, the new Style Awards category will be judged by Ana Pribylova of Ana Bella Millinery, official milliner to the event. Hats of all shapes and sizes will be in contention, along with fascinators, with Ana looking “to spot a hat that has been beautifully crafted and is an original design”.
Launching the new award at the July Course last month, jockey Hayley Turner turned fashion model, exchanging her riding hat for a series of Ana’s designs. The first female jockey in history to both win a Group One race and ride 100 winners in a calendar year, Hayley rode to one of her most famous victories – in 2011’s Darley July Cup on Dream Ahead – at the course.
“Winning the Darley July Cup was one of the best days of my career and so the July Course will always have a special place in my heart,” says Hayley. “It was great fun to be back to try out some of Ana Bella Millinery’s wonderful designs. I hope her work can inspire racegoers to get creative for this month’s awards and I’m looking forward to seeing their efforts on the big day.”
Media partnered by Velvet, the Style Awards run throughout the three-day Moët & Chandon July Festival, with Best Dressed Lady and the Milliner’s Award presented on day one, Thursday, July 11; Best Dressed Gentleman judged on day two, Friday, July 12; and Best Dressed Couple in the spotlight on day three, Saturday, July 13.
As ever, if you win a podium place, you’ll go home with some incredible prizes: the winner of the Milliner’s Award will walk away with a beautiful Ana Bella Millinery piece of their own.
“The Moët & Chandon July Festival is synonymous not only with outstanding racing but stunning fashion and headpieces are always among the most eye-catching elements of the style on show,” says Amy Starkey, regional director of The Jockey Club, East Region.
“We are delighted, therefore, to launch the Milliner’s Award this year and I have no doubt that, inspired by some of the amazing pieces modelled by Hayley, racegoers will raise the bar again in 2019.”
