Fashion: Viva Vintage with Pocket Watch & Petticoats
We are so excited to hear you're opening a Cambridge branch of pocket Watch & Petticoats! Tell us all about the new shop.
Two words: vintage heaven! We’re at the very beginning of St John’s Street, so right beside the famous Round Church. Mr Pocket Watch and I had always said before our baby, Master Smarty Pants, came along five months ago, that we’ll either open another shop or have a baby. . . Clearly the stress of a new baby wasn’t enough, so we thought ‘Let’s be totally bonkers and open another shop at the same time’. My eye bags are currently somewhere under my chin, but I just love what we do and couldn’t resist another adventure.
As regular shoppers at your Bury and Ipswich stores can attest, Pocket Watch & Petticoats is one of a kind, isn't it? What makes it unique?
Good old customer service. It’s hard to find nowadays - but not in our stores. We know what will look amazing on you and we’re honest and truthful: because we’re not online, we rely on repeat custom. You don’t get that personal shopping experience sitting behind a keyboard, so we encourage ladies to come on in and let us take the stress out of finding the dress.
We know you love a party, so are you planning a special event for the opening?
Absolutely! We have our singers ready and waiting for the confirmed date, so watch this space. A vintage lady flashmob will also be arranged, as well as the newspapers being in attendance. Follow us on Facebook to keep abreast of all the exciting developments.
The fashion for retro dressing continues to grow, doesn't it? What makes the look endure, do you think?
It’s an era when ladies dressed like ladies. The fashion nowadays is really aimed at a man’s physique, with many clothes having low-slung waists, which shifts the focus more on to the hips. These outfits are higher waisted, which is much more flattering, takes you down a dress size and really shows off all the curves in all the right places. Everyone has a waist! So many ladies tell us they don’t, but in our outfits you can’t help but establish that wonderful hourglass figure and show it off to perfection.
Your clothes have the vibe of vintage, but they're cut for the modern woman, aren't they?
We stock clothes from casual-chic and office wear to elegantattire perfect for weddings, Ladies’ Days, parties and proms. Our sizes range from a size 6 to a 26, so whether you’re a Pocket Rocket or a Curvaceous Goddess, you name it, we have it and you need it!
We know it's not easy being a bricks-and-mortar retailer, so what made you want to take the plunge and expand?
In our four years, we have learned that you get out what you put into a business. Cambridge is a big city and we love the amazing vibe every time we visit. So we wanted to sprinkle our magic into an already incredible place.
You have a lot of loyal customers in Bury and Ipswich. You reward their loyalty with a points scheme, don't you? How does it work?
Every £25 that’s spent in our stores receives Pocket Watch point stamps in your ration books! After a few visits and once the book is full, the customer gets to choose a free dress of their choice, up to £60 in value. That works out as about 12.5% off every purchase you make.
We love our customers, so wanted to make sure they feel treated and rewarded. Without them, as an independent that trades only in bricks and mortar, we wouldn’t be here. When you visit our stores, you can see how important it is to shop local, shop independent and keep the high street going. So if you invest in us, we invest in you.
What would you say to encourage our Cambridge readers to visit the new shop?
Don’t take our word for it on the amazing shopping experience that awaits you: we have nearly 1,000 five-star honest reviews on our Facebook page from ladies who have been blown away by beauty! In our four years of being open, we are lucky enough to have won five different awards, including Best Independent Shop in Suffolk three years running, Best Customer Service and Employee of the Year! If you want to feel fabulous and look a million dollars, there’s only one place to go: Pocket Watch & Petticoats!
