Javelin, the much-loved independent boutique with branches in both Bury St Edmunds and Sudbury, has changed hands after more than three decades in the same family.

Founded and run by Jeremy and Joanna Clayton, the brand is known for bringing the best of men’s and women’s fashion to the Suffolk high street - and new owner Oliver Tookman says that won’t change.

“The name remains above the door – and long may it do so,” he says. “The existing team continue to work here and effectively we will simply build on what Javelin has already achieved very successfully over the last 34 years.”

Oliver, who lives in Bishop’s Stortford, already runs men’s outfitters Robert Goddard, growing it from a single Wisbech shop in 2008 to a chain of 10 across East Anglia, Berkshire and Surrey today.

He adds: “We look to give our loyal customers what they can’t get from the multiple chains any longer. I feel like service on the High Street is dead – and that’s where we step in with a great store environment with loyal, long-standing teams to give great service.”

Jeremy and Joanna say hearing Oliver talk about the synergy between the two businesses proved he was “the natural person to take the reins”, adding: “I can hardly find the words to express how grateful we are to our customers – some of whom have come on the whole journey with us – and our staff from over the past 34 years. It has been fantastic.”
