Fashion: Escape to a wardrobe wonderland

Breezy dresses, swishy skirts, dramatic jumpsuits: there’s a dreamy feel to spring/summer’s key trends. Rohiny Belani, Velvet’s contributing fashion editor, invites you to take a break from your newsfeed and step into a dream new-season wardrobe, all from Cambridge boutique Bowns

All Yellow

Each season brings with it a new “it” colour, and this spring/summer we are coveting yellow, hoping it sticks around for more than six months. Why? Because yellow is so wearable yet underrated. What’s more, psychologists have suggested that wearing yellow can actually boost your mood. A chance to be on trend and happier? This sounds too good to be true. Here’s how to wear it, whether you want to be bold or start with the shade on a muted note.

Tailor Made

When it comes to tailoring, the key is not to get too carried away. For a simple yet striking look, style a monochrome dress with a scarf and belt. White will always remain a favourite colour in the hot season, for those rare sunny English days. Meet the summer-approved alternative to your beloved oversized trouser suit: the jumpsuit. Stick with neutral tones, add a fancy belt providing a pop of colour, and you cannot go wrong.

Prints Charming

Wear it for work or the weekend: the shirt dress is a summer wardrobe staple for the main reason it is so versatile. Opt for an oversized style, or alternatively add some zest to the look by selecting a classy print.

Prints are all about being edgy this season; maximalism is alive and well, more is more ringing truer than ever before.

On Location

Madingley Hall in Cambridge, built in the 16th Century, serves as a great location for conferences and weddings. However, the Velvet team took advantage of the venue’s great gardens and - prior to the coronavirus lockdown - shot the spring/summer editorial in its beautiful estate. The Hall is one of the few University venues to offer all year-round availability for residential and non-residential events, offering superb catering using locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients, a bar for that post-meeting wind-down, ample car parking and even croquet lawns in season.
