The journey

Bored with the high street and frustrated with the lack of independent clothes shops in our area, we opened our first Lilac Rose shop in Leamington Spa in 2005 and our second in Cambridge 10 years ago. Our ambition was to create a welcoming shopping environment while bringing a bit of theatre and fun to the high street! We haven't paused for breath since.

The ups and downs

There have definitely been a few. You really ride the economic wave in retail and obviously none more so than in the past 18 months. But there are so many more positives – the support of our team and our customers are an absolute treat. Cambridge has a mix of locals, students and visitors so no day is ever the same.

Why fashion and why Cambridge?

I have always been a fashion and clothes junkie! I am so fascinated how putting on a lovely dress and a bit of lippy can turn your mood around. We chose Cambridge because we wanted a location that had a strong local community, tourism, and students. It helps that it is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and never fails to leave me in awe.

Autumn and winter collections are looking amazing. Designers have worked hard to pull it out of the bag during the lockdowns. I was concerned they would play it safe but not at all –they knew that clothes would be a big part of getting us back to normal. Look forward to beautiful jewel colours, amazing winter florals, jumpers with strong geo patterns, needlepoint cord and some fabulous coats.

I've got a couple of winter weddings to go to and cannot wait to get dressed up, so have my eye on a green winter floral maxi dress from Hope & Ivy. I think it will be versatile enough to wear after the weddings – I might even turn it up and make it into a midi so I can wear it more casually. It's a beautiful colour with a nod to boho chic.
