Expert: How to reclaim your style – and sense of self – in midlife
In midlife, our sense of self - and style - shifts. To mark Menopause Awareness Month, Cambridge stylist Suzy Richards, founder of Gladrags Style Services, shares her top dressing tips for these transitional times
Menopause and perimenopause have become hot topics in recent years, with more information than ever before available to help us navigate the transition - but one aspect that’s still rarely talked about is the loss of identity many women experience. Hormonal changes, emotional shifts, and a changing body can leave us unsure of who we are. After years of prioritising careers, children, partners and parents we often lose focus on ourselves.Dressing during this time can feel challenging, but the good news is it doesn’t have to be. With a few practical tips and style tweaks you can feel cool, confident, and like yourself again.
Practical Tips
1. Embrace layering: we get hot (a lot!), so layering is key. Depending on the season, start with a thin cotton or linen base, add a shirt/top, light knit, and finish with a jacket or scarf. You can then remove layers as needed – and don’t forget a foldable tote for carrying the extras.
2. Choose natural fibres: Breathable materials like cotton and linen help regulate body temperature better than synthetics.
3. Think loose and airy: Loose-fitting clothes allow for better airflow. Think floaty skirts, wide-leg trousers, and dresses that don’t cling.
4. Remember comfort is queen: Elastic waistbands are a game-changer, especially when bloating hits. Avoid tight collars and anything that restricts movement, we’re so over that!
5. Get the correct underwear: A good bra can provide comfort, support, and give your shape a flattering lift (and ensure good breast health), while still looking pretty. Get professionally fitted every six months or so (shops like John Lewis offer free fittings). Ensure undies are breathable and comfortable.
6. Opt for practical footwear: I love a heel for the right occasion but all-day comfort is key. Beautiful flats, low heels, or wedges are chic and kinder to your body, and widely available.
Styling Tips
1. Flatter the tummy area: Weight often shifts here during menopause so choose pieces with clever gathering, draping, or diagonal patterns to draw the eye away. Avoid front zips which add bulk.
2. Add jewellery and accessories: Accessories can elevate your outfit and mood, as well as show your personality. Don’t underestimate the power of a favourite necklace or scarf.
3. Remember function matters: Clothes should work for us, e.g. avoid fiddly back-buttoned jumpsuits if you need the loo frequently, this will keep anxiety and sweats to a minimum.
4. Consider hemlines and lengths: Think about where clothes end. e.g. rolled up sleeves show your wrists, cropped trousers highlight ankles, and tops/jackets that end at the waist highlight shape.
5. Go for structure and shape: A structured blazer defines the shoulders and tapered waist. Tuck tops into high-waisted trousers to create a flattering 1/3 to 2/3 proportion.
6. Experiment with styles: Menopause doesn’t mean style stops, play with seasonal colours, prints, or silhouettes if they appeal to you. Don’t be afraid of ‘trends’ in the shops, they can work for us too. There isn’t one style for all of us, find yours and embrace it.
7. Invest in ‘go-to’ items: Wrap dresses, wide-leg trousers, and open blazers are timeless, stylish, and menopause-friendly. Some good quality key pieces will be the backbone of our capsule wardrobe and make dressing easier.
8. Bring back colour: use colours to show off your personality and boost your mood. Start small with accessories if you’re hesitant.
Style as Self-Care
Fashion isn’t just about appearance, it’s a powerful tool for self-discovery and expression. Spend time figuring out what colours and styles you love. Go through your wardrobe, try things on, mix and match, and see what feels good. Take note of interesting outfits you see in magazines, TV and on others and try them yourself.
Pop into shops - don’t be afraid to go to high street stores and try things out. Style doesn’t have an age limit and modern brands are increasingly catering to women in midlife and beyond.
A clear out of clothes that no longer serve you is uplifting. Dressing in ways that reflect who you are today can help restore your confidence, self-esteem, and sense of fun. When you feel comfortable you’re more likely to step out, engage with the world, and enjoy life.
Final Thought
You’ve already lived through decades of experiences and challenges, so celebrate your journey. You are fabulous and beautiful, and you deserve to feel confident and comfortable in yourself. Now go look great, feel great and be you again.
