Cover Story: Want to do beach chic? Get a kimono
Dressed down for summer days and up for summer nights, the kimono is the ultimate season staple. Rohiny Belani, Velvet’s contributing fashion editor, shows us how to style this year’s bold and beautiful prints from KLEED
Inspired by traditional Japanese robes, contemporary kimonos have been given a modern update via bold prints, intricate embroidery and varying lengths for a cool boho vibe. And if you think they are only appropriate for music festivals, think again: kimonos can be worn with anything in the closet, from skinny jeans to shorts to a bikini, or as a dress on their own.
We know some people are still a bit confused about how to wear kimonos, but give them a try and you won’t regret it. Swift to throw on and style up, they are incredibly versatile, taking you from bedroom to beach to bar.
On these pages, we’re showcasing the current collection at KLEED Kimonos, all perfect for wearing on the beach or for a country park stroll on a hot summer day. Hippie girl gone modern and sophisticated - that’s the summer look we’re loving.
About the Brand:
KLEED Kimonos was founded by Carolina Guedes Cruz, a dynamic Portuguese entrepreneur with two ruling passions in her life: fashion and wildlife conservation.
KLEED, meaning “robe” in Afrikaans, was born out of these two passions. Designed to take sophisticated women effortlessly from day to night, its pieces are swish, casual and quirky, featuring wildlife-inspired prints in rich savannah hues and each embroidered with an African animal. Partnered with local NGOs in Africa, KLEED is also supporting protection of the white rhino.
