Cover Shoot: Step into a Deco-inspired dream. . .

Inspired by the all-out glamour of the Gatsby age, this month’s fashion shoot is a moment of pure romance. In the arms of her own Jay, Velvet’s contributing fashion editor Rohiny Belani takes a twirl in Daisy Fay’s Mary Janes

Feathered headpieces? Check. Jewelled dresses? Check. More Brooks Brothers than a Princeton reunion? Check. Spectator shoes, cloche hats, and Bakelite bangles? Check, check, check.

Gatsby style epitomises the roaring 1920s: plush, lavish and elegant. Women wore dresses all day, every day, rain or shine. Embellishment went a little crazy; the more sparkle, the better. Women felt the need to express themselves, and their demureness was replaced with, well, a little loudness. Crown a dazzling drop-waisted shift dress with a glitzy headband, white gloves, red lipstick and simply sparkle away. . .

For men, green, grey or midnight blue are the best colours to wear to recreate this period look. Peak and notch-lapel suits were very popular, with jackets high-buttoned and cuts very form-fitting: when choosing a 1920s-style suit, go for a jacket with four to six buttons and a sharp, snug fit. And don’t forget the all-important vintage style shoes: they will really complete your look. Jay Gatsby famously loved a two-tone brogue.

Feel the Love

Think Gatsby style sounds too much for a wedding? Absolutely not. If anything, it’s one that’ll make a statement — a really sparkly one.

An easy way to set the tone is to choose a venue which immediately sends out the right vibes to your guests. Cambridge’s Gonville Hotel is ideal: it has great cocktails, the food is spectacular and the décor could not get more Gatsby, with a piano in the bar, colourful seating in their restaurant, glamorous chandeliers that dazzle like a 1920s headpiece and staff always on hand to make your day extra special.

Cap the night with a send-off wedding guests won't soon forget: driving away in one of the Gonville’s vintage, chauffeur driven Bentleys is the perfect way to end the night.
