Beauty: Why bright is beautiful for AW21
You’ve heard of ‘dopamine dressing’: dress happy and the feelings will follow? Welcome to its sister beauty trend. Paint your face with a rainbow of brights and you can’t fail to feel better, writes Alice Ryan
Eyeko Lash Alert Mascara in Purple, £19, eyeko.co.uk
As an Eighties/Nineties child, I have always had a weakness for a coloured mascara - particularly purple. And this new release from Eyeko is a beaut. A definite purple, yet sufficiently soft to make it wearable for everyday, like all Lash Alerts it deploys caffeine, biotin and a dose of fibres to perk, plump and elongate, plus arginine oil to condition. Coverage and lasting power are also unrivalled.
Shiro Essence Lip Oil Colour in Marigold, £34, shiro-shiro.uk
Lips need a little extra love as the seasons turn and this oil, which couples care and comfort with the prettiest swish of pigment, is just the job. Blended with calendula to soothe and shea to moisturise, it delivers a polished sheen and a tint that taps into the bright-is-beautiful trend without being shouty. Plus it’s scented with yuzu.
KVD Vegan Beauty Super Pomade in Magenta, £19, Boots stores
Formulated for budge-proof, smudge-proof wear on lids, lash lines and brows, Super Pomade is a true one-pot wonder. It comes in 17 shades, from naturals (Blonde, Auburn) through to bold and downright brave (Scarlet, Roxy Purple). The colour that’s currently sell-out popular is this eye-popping pink: apply in place of your usual liner and, even if you’re only off to Tesco, you’ll turn the party.
Illamasqua Experimental Artistry Palette, £39, illamasqua.com
Containing a complete colour wheel of shadows, from primary yellow (Expression) through to tertiary magenta (Monologue), this is a real sweetie shop of an eye palette. Inviting play - whether you want to go for a full rainbow lid or smudge a single colour along the lash lines - every shade comes in Illamasqua’s signature satin formula: creamy, blendable, buildable, pigment-packed. Joyful.
Shiro Ginger Lip Stick in Opera Mauve, £38, shiro-shiro.uk
While super-matte lips continue to trend, they’re not for everyone. For me, the texture and finish of this Shiro lippy is perfection: officially a semi-matte, it looks modern but also feels lovely to wear (thanks to a good dose of shea butter, which staves off dehydration, plus argan oil to shield from UV). The pigment is brilliantly buildable, so you can layer up or down depending how much punch you want your lips to pack.
Nudestix Nudies Bloom in Picante, £30, lookfantastic.com
Nudies Bloom is one of those rare-gem products which I recommend to everyone who’ll listen. A genuinely multi-purpose pigment stick, it gives a flush of colour - and a delicious, dewy finish - to cheeks, lips, lids; all three for a monochromatic makeup look. Korean brands being famed for their innovation, the formula is long-wearing and water-resistant, plus there’s a top quality blending brush slotted into the other end of the tube. Every handbag should have one.
Earthy Nail Polish in Buttercup Yellow and Poseidon Blue, £7.99, earthynailpolish.com
Designed to be planet-friendly as well as high-performance - even the bottle caps are made from bamboo to lower carbon footprint - Earthy Nail Polish has just widened its colour collection. Additions to the plant-based range, formulated using sugar cane, cassava and corn, include this pair of beautiful brights, pictured. Colour-rich, smooth-applying, swift-drying, long-wearing, chip-resistant, they tick all boxes.
