I’m prone to cold sores and, being woefully allergic to all over-the-counter treatments, find my best defence is SPF lip balm - UV being a major trigger. Since wearing SPF day in, day out, all year round, I’ve averaged just a couple of annual breakouts, and have also become a bonafide lip balm expert. This dr.organic formula is a favourite: not only does it provide SPF 15 protection, it’s also brilliantly hydrating (thanks to a combo of shea butter, jojoba oil and Vitamin E) and long-lasting (the result of barrier-forming beeswax). The coconut oil makes it smell of summer holidays, too.

A clever combination of style and substance, this lip oil delivers the polish of a gloss and the hydration of a balm in one. Rich but remarkably non-sticky, the formula is loaded with nourishing plant extracts - including grapefruit, castor, sunflower and jojoba seed oils - to give lips instant comfort as well as shine. A calling-card product for the French beauty brand, Sisley’s Nutritive Lip Balm has been given a makeover to mark its 20th year on the market. The formula, always a big-hitter, now packs an even bigger skincare punch: highly concentrated kokum and mango butters soothe and hydrate, plum kernel oil strengthens and nourishes, and sweet white lupin and wheat germ oils plump, smooth and soften. Whatever your lip concerns - dryness, soreness, fine lines - this balm will work genuine wonders. It’s pricey, but a little goes a long way.

Lottie London Peach Please Plumped AF Sheer Plumping Lip Gloss, £5.95, lottie.london

Wave the doe-footed wand of this plumping gloss and magic will happen. If your lips are feeling a bit flat and/or looking fine-lined, it’s a great go-to: loaded with hydrating hero ingredient hyaluronic acid, deployed via so-called ‘filling spheres’, plus a tailored peptide complex, it has a tangible plumping effect. There’s a wee tingle as it gets to work, but it’s not unpleasant, and the super-smooth, high-gloss finish is very Y2K (but without the gloop).
