Beauty: Metallics are in. Time to shine
Proof that less isn’t always more, makeup has taken a maximalist turn for winter. Metallics are trending for eyes, lips, cheeks and body, too. It’s time to shine, writes Alice Ryan
Glossier Lidstar Glistening Eye Glow in Fawn, £15, glossier.com
Packed with pigment yet light as a feather on lids, Lidstar delivers both impressive colour and shine. The buttery texture makes it a pleasure to apply and negates the need for primer, as it sets perfectly, no creasing. An added bonus: two of the six shades, including Fawn, pictured, are vegan.
Mulac Strobing Cream Highlighter in Chaos, £10.24, mulaccosmetics.com
The definition of a multi-purpose product, Strobing Cream is designed for use as eyeshadow topper, lip shine, and highlighter for both face and body. Loaded with chromatic rose-gold particles, suspended in a clear gel which fixes as it dries, it’s mermaid realness in a pot.
Dear Dahlia Paradise Shine Eye Sequins in Actress, £25, feelunique.com
Combining lustrous pearl pigments with light refracting glitter, this liquid shadow both shines *and* sparkles. The whipped, water-based formula wooshes onto skin and locks in the colour as it dries. Wear alone for ‘polished’; layer over a colour pop for ‘showgirl’.
Beauty Pie Wondercolour Cream Shadow Stick in Copperini, normal price £22, members’ price £5.19, beautypie.com
Unlike so many cream shadows, which are brilliantly blendable yet seriously prone to smudging, Wondercolour, formulated with nifty water-resistant flat powder, both glides on and doesn’t budge. The wind-up stick is a breeze to use and the colour, which doubles as liner, is pleasingly punchy.
Stila Trifecta Metallica Lip, Eye & Cheek Stick in Gold, £28, select Boots stores and stila.co.uk
Trifecta is, as the name suggests, the triple threat: a one-stop, one-swipe metallic pigment stick for eyes, lips and cheeks. The silky formula, the result of an all-natural blend of emollients, can be buffed out for a subtle sheen or built up for high-octane shine. It sets perfectly, too.
Too Faced Love Light Prismatic Highlighter in Blinded by the Light, £26, Debenhams, The Grafton, Cambridge and arc, Bury St Edmunds and toofaced.com
Love Light is an ingenious hybrid: the soft powder-meets-cream texture makes it pimpsy to blend and build, yet, thanks to Too Faced’s patented Prisma Shine technology, it delivers the intense and unshifting shimmer you’d expect from a liquid.
Huda 3D Highlighter Palette in Golden Sands, £33, select Boots stores and hudabeauty.com
A swift and elegant alternative to full contouring, this four-pan palette is designed to bring out both your glow and finest features. There’s a light-bouncing base to smooth skin; pale and dark shades to highlight and define cheekbones and jawline; and a warm colour to add flush to cheek apples.
Chantecaille Lip Cristal in Rose Quartz, £47, SpaceNK, Trinity Street, Cambridge and chantecaille.co.uk
Coating lips with both colour and sparkle via soft, wearable pearl-infused pigments, Lip Cristal in Rose Quartz is sweet enough to wear day-to-day and glam enough for dinner, drinks and dancing. It’s not just a pretty face, either: for every one sold, a tree is planted in Kenya.
