Beauty: Here's how to get the Old Hollywood look

As we all crave the comfort nostalgia brings, beauty is harking back to Hollywood's Golden Age. Think liquid liner, golden lids, red lips and starlet skin - all of which appeared on the AW catwalk. Alice Ryan gets the look

Sensai Shiny Foliage Eye Colour Palette, £58,

Inspired by the burnished shades of autumn leaves, this palette is golden in more ways than one. Milled super-finely - they’re designed to recreate the lustre of silk on your skin - the shadows slip seamlessly onto lids and blend beautifully, for a finish that’s effortless yet polished. The colour-correcting matte base is a particular triumph, making eyes look instantly brighter and anchoring the shimmering shadows really well.

Ameliorate Transforming Body Lotion Illuminating Glow, £22.50,

It’s a bit of a wonder product, this one. Billed as “exfoliation, hydration and illumination in one bottle”, it combines light-bouncing micro-pearl particles with a subtle tint to give skin a visual glow, while lactic acid and almond get to work behind the scenes, exfoliating, hydrating and protecting - it’s clinically proven to boost moisture levels in the dermis for 24 hours. In short: it’s instant starlet skin.

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso, £17,

Boldest cherry red, this liquid lipstick is a beaut. Thanks to the recently refined doe-foot applicator, you can apply it with precision and, setting to a colour-dense and creamy matte, it won’t bleed or fade (Stila promises six-hour staying power). Thanks to the lightweight formula, which includes moisturising vitamin E and avocado oil, it feels lovely on the lips, too.

Beauty Pie Triple Beauty Liquid Luminizer in Golden Whirl, £20 or £4.73 for members,

Looking a bit peaky? Mix a dab of this Liquid Luminizer into your morning moisturiser and bam: you’ve got that well-slept, well-hydrated, healthy-diet glow. Thanks to its airy, whipped texture and subtle colour and shimmer - it has a soft, champagne-gold sheen - the results are remarkably natural looking. If you want a more full-on, stage-lit luminosity, tap Golden Whirl neat onto cheek- and brow bones.

Mulac Seal the Deal White Natural Translucent Loose Powder, £16.27,

A dusting of this magic powder and you’re ready for your close-up, Mr DeMille. Containing kaolin and zinc for their natural fixing and sebum-balancing properties; argan, jojoba and sunflower oils to soften and hydrate; and both mica and silk mica for a porcelain-smooth finish, it’s a fast track to flawless skin. Lightly kabuki brush it across your whole face for an overall soft focus and/or use the sponge applicator to mattify persistent shiny spots or bake under-eye bags.

Hourglass Confession Ultra Slim High Intensity Refillable Lipstick in My Icon Is, £33,

Winning Allure’s Best of Beauty Award for "best cool red lipstick" soon after its 2018 launch, My Icon Is has become, well, an icon. Deep and rich yet not too dark, it’s the *perfect* shade of movie-star red. The satin finish is classically glam and, despite being deliciously creamy, the formula is impressively smudge-resistant and doesn’t feather, either. Plus it’s vegan, cruelty-free and comes in a waste-reducing refillable holder.

Sisley So Intense Eyeliner, £45,

Whether you’re aiming for perky Audrey Hepburn kick-flicks or sultry Sophia Loren cat-eyes, Sisley’s So Intense is your go-to liquid liner. The fibre tip is fine with just the right amount of flex, making it pleasingly biddable. The liner itself is ultra-fluid, literally sliding onto the skin, but dries rock-hard: it stays put, no flaking, until you take it off, basically. Plus the So Intense formula is loaded with beauty-boosting actives like vitamin peptide, said to encourage lash growth.
