Beauty: Glow running low? Fake it till you make it
Radiance levels running low? Give your makeup routine a midwinter glow up and fake it till you make it, says Alice Ryan
The Naughty iteration of Huda Beauty’s best-selling New Nude palette is a sparkler: along with eight of the brand’s signature velvety mattes, it contains five high-shine metallics, four light-bouncing creams and, making its debut, a gloss suspended with bronze and berry pearls. The latter, Slippery, is a standout: it’s brilliant as a shade-intensifying base, used solo for a swift slick of shimmer, and dotted in inner eye corners to instantly lighten and brighten.
ICONIC London Sheer Blush in Rose Riot, £18, iconiclondon.com
Blusher is my desert island beauty product - I’m so pale, I look sickly without it - and this Sheer Blush formula is my new favourite. A gel which transforms to liquid on the skin, it gives cheeks the prettiest wash of watercolour. Pat it on with a fingertip and blend out with a brush or sponge, layering to achieve your chosen intensity. It doubles nicely as a lip pigment, FYI.
Delivering a visibly more radiant complexion in a single pump of its tube, thanks to sheer pigments, light-bouncing pearl particles and a moisturising base enriched with rose oil and red pepper extract, GloWish Multidew is formulated to bring out the best in your skin rather than covering it. Available in 13 shades, it blends seamlessly and the finish is both soft-focus and pleasingly dewy. If you want the no-makeup makeup look, this is for you.
Freshly Cosmetics Radiant Glow Primer Serum, £29, freshlycosmetics.com/en
A Spanish green beauty brand, Freshly has just arrived in the UK and I am already a convert. Formulated with 99% natural and vegan ingredients, this primer serum is a true makeup/skincare hybrid. As well as making skin look brighter, courtesy of a suspension of sparkling mineral micas, it makes it feel better, too, thanks to hydrating salicornia complex and nourishing jojoba oil. Use as a radiance boosting base for makeup or alone for a subtle yet discernible glow. Also: it smells divine.
Studio 10 Plumping Blush Glow-plexion, £24, studio10beauty.com
Billed as the ‘ultimate wake-up-and-glow complexion boost’, this inspired formula delivers both blush and glow in one. Containing warm pink pigments and light-bouncing pearl, it flushes cheeks with (effortlessly blendable and buildable) colour and luminosity in a dab of the finger. Enriched with Studio 10’s signature plumper Adipofill and natural oil-absorbing polymers, it gives a soft-filter finish, too.
Sisley Phyto-teint Nude Second-skin Foundation, £68, sisley-paris.co.uk
Cards on the table: following an early (orange, cakey) disaster, I’ve always had an uneasy relationship with foundation. But, post-40, I’ve had to face the fact my skin needs a little zhush - and this formula from Sisley is The One. Water as opposed to oil based, it’s brilliantly fluid to apply and light as air to wear; you barely know it’s there. Yet, thanks to a nifty combination of light-diffusing microspheres and perfectly matched pigments - it comes in 18 shades, spanning light to dark, cool through warm - it evens tone and, slightly satin in finish, leaves your complexion dewy.
Freshly Cosmetics Iridescent Glow Liquid Highlighter in Cotton Candy, £15, freshlycosmetics.com/en
This liquid highlighter promises to flatter, no matter your age, skin tone or makeup style. Microfine mineral micas, which strike a lovely balance between glitter and sheen, sit atop natural pigments which create a warm and healthy-looking undertone. It works both as a traditional highlighter, picking out the high points of the face, and as an impressively adherent eyeshadow base. Plus it doses skin with hyaluronic acid, so skin gets a bonus moisture boost.
Beauty Pie Glow-all Super Powder Face Palette, £48 or £17.12 to members, beautypie.com
This four-in-one palette banishes pale and peaky skin in the puff of a brush. Each deploying Beauty Pie’s patented PowerPowder technology, which combines rich and long-lasting pigments with a light and luminous finish, it contains a matte bronzer for warmth, a pair of blushers for a flush of colour and a highlighter, in softest champagne, for shimmer.
Studio 10 Youth Lift Glow-plexion, £26, studio10beauty.com
A four-in-one product - it acts as primer, radiance crème, illuminator and highlighter - Youth Lift Glow-plexion is a little bit of magic for your makeup bag. Formulated with golden pigments, which are glowy but crucially not glittery (which means a natural-looking finish), add a drop to foundation to give your base a dewy boost, wear solo over moisturiser for a subtle sheen or tap on top of makeup as a highlighter. It also contains firming and hydrating actives, which work behind the scenes while you wear.
