Beauty: Five of the best eco-friendly deodorants
Looking for a deodorant which is naturally free from nasties yet still holds up in a heatwave? Alice Ryan rounds up five of the best
Evolve Organic Beauty Pure Prebiotic Roll On Deodorant, £11, evolvebeauty.co.uk
Billed as “both clean and clever. . . a bit like skincare for the underarms”, this organic, all-natural, aluminium-free roll-on is formulated not only to control bacteria and combat odour, but also to do your skin good. Prebiotics from noni plant stem cells support the skin’s biome, encouraging healthy and deterring malodorous bacteria, while aloe vera moisturises and sage oil cools and soothes. The result is a roll-on which is both effective and super-kind to skin, making it ideal if you suffer with sore or dry underarms. Handmade in small batches in Evolve’s Hertfordshire studio, it’s also sweetly scented with white flowers.
FFS Fresh Natural Deodorant, £11, ffsfresh.co.uk
Worried it would feel sticky and sweaty on the skin, I’ll admit I had reservations when I first started using deodorant in balm form. This iteration, though, won me right over. Free from plastic, cruelty, aluminium, alcohol, parabens and sulphates, it contains only natural, vegan ingredients, most notably bicarb of soda to gently shift skin PH and stave off whiffs, and cornstarch to absorb moisture. The cornstarch is, for me, key: unlike a lot of natural deodorants, which reduce smell but not sweating, this one really does keep you nice and dry. Thanks to the coconut oil and shea butter in the balm, it’s also gentle on the skin and, thanks to grapefruit and peppermint extracts, smells splendidly fresh too.
NAYA Everyday Noni Botanical Deo Cream, £24, nayaglow.com
Promising 24-hour protection from odour, NAYA’s new deo cream deploys a pair of plant superheroes to neutralise pong-causing bacteria: noni fruit extract, which is chock-full of antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal compounds, and cacay oil, rich in nourishing linoleic acid. Salvia officinalis oil and aloe vera are their sidekicks, respectively refreshing and softening the underarm’s delicate skin. The cream feels luxe on the fingers yet is pleasingly lightweight to apply and swift to dry. Plus all the botanical ingredients combine to give it a mood-boosting scent reminiscent of a spa day.
Green People Quinoa & Prebiotics Deodorant, £11.50, greenpeople.co.uk
Proof that natural formulas can be both innovative and impressively high performance, this addition to the Green People eco roll-on range is a standout. Two salts, one derived from a fatty acid and the other from volcanic rock, do the heavy lifting: the first acts like a sponge, sucking up odour molecules before they release into the air, and the second is powerfully antibacterial. Prebiotics also work to promote healthy bacterial flora on the skin, while rosemary, aloe vera and shea butter reduce irritation. Slightly milky, the deodorant covers the underarm in the lightest of layers which smells citrusy and dries instantly - and also stays citrusy and dry: 93% of testers reported 24 hours of protection.
L’Occitane Shea Deodorant Balm, £17.50, L’Occitane, Rose Crescent, Cambridge and arc, Bury St Edmunds
Swift to eliminate aluminium salts from all its deodorants back in 2012, after they were first suspected of having a negative impact on human health, a decade on and L’Occitane’s deodorant balms remain an industry pace-setter. 98.1% natural, this shea formula combines absorbent corn starch and tapioca powder with pH-shifting baking soda and a blend of essential oils for skin comfort and care. The balm is rich without being greasy, drying down to a velvety finish and leaving armpits feeling clear and clean for up to 48 hours. There’s a Verbena version too, if you like a zingier scent.
