Ad: Bliss awaits at Cambridge Country Club Spa
A visit to the Cambridge Country Club’s Elemis Spa is as revitalising as a week away. Lisa Millard packs her bag
Even the approach to the Cambridge Country Club is impressive. The glass frontage glints in the sunlight and the gentle Cambridgeshire countryside frames the spa, wellness centre, gym, restaurant and award-winning golf course in verdant splendour.
Inside gets better. Marble is the material of choice for the reception and expansive stairway, making me feel I could be somewhere in Dubai rather than a stone’s throw from Cambridge. Pops of colour from artwork, blush and plush pink velvet seating, chandeliers and even an inside blossom tree in bloom add to the splendour.
The Country Club attracts a variety of people for a number of pleasures. Some are working out in the well-equipped gym and fitness studio that boasts floor to ceiling windows with views distracting enough to take the mind off labouring on an exercise bike or running machine.
There is the London Dermatology Clinic for skin and hair treatments, chic manicure and pedicure suite, lustrous Himalayan salt spa, stunning swimming pool, sauna and steam room and not forgetting the rainforest showers, elegant treatment rooms and sofa-filled snug to kick back in a fluffy robe and relax. Many reasons to be cheerful.
There are some tempting spa days on the Country Club menu. The Mindful Spa Day (£139) combines massage and facial with a gourmet lunch and glass of Champagne and use of the Himalayan salt spa. The Tranquility Spa Day (£179) offers a longer treatment and afternoon tea served with Champagne. Express Elemis facials and body treatments (£40 for 30 minutes) are available when you need a quickie and velvet thrones await in the manicure and pedicure suite.
My first visit - I say first as I hope there will be more - included a treat in the shape of a personalised Elemis facial addressing my wish list: (1) making my tired under-eyes look better and (2) leaving me feeling refreshed and relaxed.
Treatment rooms are particularly lovely – dove grey walls, candlelight and comfy beds. Once tucked up under layers of soft towels, the therapist began the treatment using an aroma-filled oil which, combined with the sweeping cleansing massage, soon had me calm and entirely in the moment.
The facial featured circular massage movements and gentle tapping around my eyes to banish puffiness and dark circles (yes, I have both), and then warm flannels covered my face making me feel ready for bed. I confess the therapist had to shake me from slumber at the end but once I had enjoyed a glass of chilled water, I felt revived and swear the facial was as nourishing as a good night’s sleep.
Post-treatment, coffee was enjoyed in the elegant lounge before heading downstairs for a spot of lunch and catch up with the friend I was sharing the day with. Some spa lunches can be a little underwhelming, but the Cambridge Country Club is known for serving fine food and our salads – goat’s cheese, orange, walnuts and beetroot – didn’t disappoint. While a touch sorrowful to leave, we departed the Cambridge Country Club replete, rejuvenated and relaxed.
