Accessories: Bracelets with a beaded message
When Sophia Duckworth, a university student at York, found herself at home in Cambridge following lockdown she wanted to do something lovely for the friends she could not see. Combining letters with Italian glass beads, freshwater pearls and crystals, Sophia made personalised bracelets that went down so well with her friends that she popped some on her insta page and has been kept very busy ever since – her ‘Beaut Bracelets’ even attracted likes from a YouTube fitness blogger and a designer at Liberty London who designed one for herself that simply spelled ‘now’. Orders have come in from as far afield as America and Canada.
“I love all things creative, predominantly painting and drawing, but I have also always loved jewellery, so starting a small bracelet business meant that I could work while doing something I love,” says Sophia, whose affordable designs start from £10. “The unisex jewellery tends to be made with pearls and a range of crystals – there is something for everyone. I am planning to continue with the bracelets while I am at university and would love to keep going for as long as I can.”
