Style Surgery
Our personal stylist, Loraine Callow, solves the mystery behind all our wardrobe blunders
Q. I can’t help but think I need to give my wardrobe a revamp to mark the arrival of 2012… but I haven’t a clue where to start. I’m a lover of the faithful black colourings and do little to stand out in the crowd, so I want this to be a year of change.
Are there any key pieces I should be looking for to get me ready for the spring season? I’m 5ft 6in, 46 and have dark brown hair, a darker skin tone and a pear shaped body.
A. If you want to ring in some changes for 2012 I would suggest that you update your black pieces with some really bold ‘standout’ items. Life is too short to be a wilting violet!

A boxy style red jacket or blazer will suit your pear shape and looks fab with black trousers and black pencil skirt – both of which will flatter your shape.
Go for a vibrant red, and brighter colours generally, as your skin/hair tone can take it.
Try a few Sweater Dresses this Spring, in a lovely brown and gold colours to complement your existing items.
Lightweight Tweeds are also going to be around this Spring – perhaps a Chanel Style boxy jacket?
Q. I’m the worst when it comes to sale shopping. I always end up with hundreds of bargains but a wardrobe full of last season’s clothes.
I work in an office environment so want a few transitional pieces that I can wear at work and out
to dinner. I’m 5ft 2in, 34 and am heavier on my top half than bottom.
A. First of all – don’t go ‘bargain hunting’ during the sales, as they are only bargains if you actually wear them!
Weed out your existing wardrobe first and be brutal – if you have multiples of items and not worn many of them I’d suggest disposing of them!
A wrap dress is a classic that can be transformed between day and night with different belts, shoes and jacket. Navy will be a great colour for suiting both business and social scenes.
Look for a fitted jacket or blazer with a classic v-neck with single-breasted buttons. Wear this with wide leg trousers for work, and jeans for smart casual.
Remember - the key is not to keep buying lots of ‘fashions’ just because the price looks right!
