Brandwatch: Original Penguin at Petrus, Cambridge

Original Penguin’s preppy and retro style has made it popular with the trendiest of men since it came into being in 1955, with one man, an attentive air stewardess and a stuffed penguin called Pete. The first piece of clothing to be launched by the brand was ’the 55’, a golfing polo shirt well ahead of its time, and Pete the Penguin was worn by icons such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Arnold Palmer, Clint Eastwood and Richard Nixon. Now a cult classic, the updated version of ‘the 55’ should be in the wardrobe of any dapper gentleman. The company has since expanded to include classic jeans, trendy bags, smart sweaters and much more.

This season’s collection takes it back to its roots with a 50s vibe that is as fashionable now as it was the first time round. Designed with the intellectual man, the artistic man and the man about town in mind, you should expect to find shrunken fit blazers, geometric print polo shirts and check shorts. Accessories include bow ties, trilbies and penny loafers.

Original Penguin combines bright colours and striking patterns with suave style that has a quirky edge.  If you’re looking to add some American retro or just a splash of colour to your wardrobe, get down to Petrus Design for this brand that is bound to get you noticed for all the right reasons.

Wardrobe Update

Boat Shoes

Boat shoes are undoubtedly the biggest summer trend for men this season. If you haven't got a pair or don't think you’re a 'boat shoe kinda guy', then shake off the stereotype and get some, wear them in any colour and with denim or chinos rolled up. All brands have an offering from £60 Hudsons to the £185 Paul Smith Hashbury.

Natural Selection Denim

Natural Selection is the denim brand to be excited about this summer. Born in England and using Darwin's Theory of Evolution for a strapline, the brand was launched last season.   It provides a purist’s denim that anyone can wear with a great range of fits and washes at reasonable prices.

Checks

Checks have been on trend for the past few seasons, most notably on shirting. This trend doesn't appear to be going anywhere for the next couple of seasons either, and why should it? It’s a good look.  My preference is for the more interesting checks and check shorts are cool too, although perhaps not worn together with a check shirt. I would say that this trend even extends to formal wear with more interesting suit fabrics such as Prince of Wales checks performing best.

World Cup Polo

World Cup paraphernalia has extended into the fashion world this month. For those not wanting to wear the three lions, many brands have jumped on the football bandwagon, most notably with World Cup polo shirts.  I can't think of a brand that I haven't seen doing a version but the pick is probably the typically understated and subtle Paul Smith polo, with the motif of a zebra wearing country colours.

Sunglasses
As it’s the height of summer, sunglasses are my final item of choice for this month.   A summer essential accessory for both men and women, worn conventionally or on the head or t-shirt, you can't go wrong with a classic aviator.  I always think it’s a sign of class to see the flash of the linea rossa, the signature of Prada Sport.
