Velvet looks at the three massive hair trends taking this season by storm

Welcoming a list of classic, elegant and sophisticated styles, all we know is that it’s about one thing - looking lady-like!

New York went wavy, London loved the ponytail, Paris was pretty and Milan made it all about the up-do.

Post-War waves, à la Katharine Hepburn, gave Anna Sui’s distinctly seventies mix of playful prints a touch of fifties glamour, while Betsy Johnson channelled the same style but swept to the side for a sexier look.

To achieve the look, use a large barrel curling tong and smooth with anti-frizz serum to get the glossy Hollywood effect. Finish with full red lips and delicate sultry eyes.

Zac Posen roughly pinned waves at the nape of the neck to

create a slightly harder look to reflect the tailored, structured intensity of his show.

The power ponytail was the forbearer of contemporary style in London; some made it teased while some ultra-polished.

Jaeger London went for a super smooth, glamorous side pony, low at the nape of the neck with a serious side parting.

In contrast, Erdem went for a swept back and slightly teased pony that matched their romantic, whimsical prints.

Nicole Farhi’s girls didn’t have a hair out of place; slick and simple was the look, just like the pieces they were sporting.

Paris, the city of romance and beauty, did not disappoint. Our very own Kate Moss lead Louis Vuitton to glory with a swept up chignon, teased a little and topped with a

delicate pavé of diamonds.

Valentino created the same effect adding large, loose plaits for a truly elegant, if a little bohemian elegance.

Lastly Milan showcased mid-century modernism with big bouffants, structure and volume.

Fendi went for real powerhouse hair, high and disorderly, even a little bit crazy scientist whilst Marni’s up-do was a little more dishevelled but all the up-do’s have one thing in common - showcase the face, no hiding behind fringes and bangs.

Clean and elegant are truly the orders of the season.
