Getting my figure back

Gemma Treby was a size 8 fitness freak when she fell pregnant with her first baby in May last year. Now, six months after baby Theo was born, she is nearly back into her pre-pregnancy jeans, with the help of personal trainer Pat McAleese

fell pregnant in May last year. Having always considered myself a fitness freak, I didn’t know how my mind and body would react to the whole taking-things-easy attitude that pregnancy demands. Then, of course, I had no way of knowing what kind of shape my body would be in post-pregnancy, or whether I would ever be able to get back into my size 8 jeans.
Well, the answer was that I loved taking things easy and swapping my crazy fitness routine for swimming a few times a week. My appetite soared during pregnancy and I craved hot buttered toast and jacket potatoes. The answer to the second question is that my body had completely changed shape, and six weeks after the birth of my beautiful baby Theo, I had gained 2 stone 4lbs. When I fell pregnant, I weighed 9 stone, and the scales were now reading 11 stone 4lbs. This didn't bother me as much as I thought it would, as staring back at me was my healthy baby boy, who reminded me
that it was all worth it.
However, I desperately missed exercising, and was looking forward to my first run around the block after I had had the OK from the doctor. It hurt like crazy, but it gave me a buzz and a welcome break from the house that I had been hibernating in. The following day, I had my first session with a personal trainer, Pat
McAleese. I realise how lucky I am to have the help of a personal trainer, and, of course, help from my Mum to look after the baby.
But to me, exercising is like taking vitamins; it makes me feel great, gives me energy and most of all makes me happy - happy enough to stop spending money on the internet and drinking half a bottle
of wine every evening!

By the time Theo was ten weeks old we had established a good routine, and I was able to visit Pat twice a week for a one-on-one session and to go to his exercise class on Wednesday mornings at Perfect U in Newmarket. The class was a great opportunity to meet
