Four Top Body Hang Ups

Four Safe Solutions
Don’t let your body hang-ups ruin your bikini confidence. The Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital offers a range of surgical and non-surgical treatments in a safe surgical setting
Cosmetic surgery has been widely debated in the world’s media. From scare stories in the broadsheets to those ‘incredible makeover’ photo shoots in celebrity magazines, it’s an issue that divides opinions and gets everyone talking. But it seems to me that most of us are now taking a common-sense approach to cosmetic surgery, seeing it simply as a solution to the body hang-ups that get us down. It’s not about looking like a Barbie doll or aiming for perfection, and it’s not to be used as an alternative to keeping fit and eating well. Instead, cosmetic surgery is there for the things that diet and exercise just can’t do. Many of us have something we’d like to change about our bodies – whether it’s loose skin following dramatic weight loss or unsightly varicose veins that prevent us from wearing dresses and skirts. Many of us would like to boost our bra size or fight against the signs of ageing. And why shouldn’t we? Cosmetic surgery may not be right for everyone, but it is now available and affordable to more people than ever before. Last month, I paid a visit to the Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital to find out which treatments are available to help with four of our most common body hang-ups.
Body hang-up 1: Loose skin around the stomach
Treatment Tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty)
What is involved? This procedure aims to flatten your stomach by tightening your abdominal muscles. Performed under general anaesthetic, the operation involves making incisions across the lower abdomen and around the tummy and then removing excess skin and fat.
Body hang-up 2: Signs of ageing
Treatment Anti-wrinkle treatment by injection
Why choose a cosmetic procedure? Injectible anti-wrinkle treatments can produce more dramatic and longer-lasting results than anti-ageing creams or serums and offer an alternative to surgery.
What is involved? Injectible treatments are now often used to help slow down the signs of ageing and as a non-surgical alternative to facelifts or brow lifts. There are a number of different treatments to reduce wrinkles, including muscle relaxants (such as Botulinum toxin) that work by blocking the nerve impulses that cause muscle contraction. Another technique uses dermal fillers, which are injected to plump out wrinkles and laughter lines. Both treatments take approximately 15 minutes; the effects of muscle relaxant treatments last approximately two to four months and the effects of dermal fillers generally last for up to one year.
Body hang-up 3: Stubborn areas of fat
Treatment Liposuction
What is involved? Liposuction reshapes the body permanently by removing fatty deposits from problem areas, such as the tummy, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees and chin. The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthetic and may be suitable for people who are already at their target weight but want to lose stubborn fat in certain problem areas.
Body hang-up 4: Varicose veins
Treatment Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) or VNUS Closure Procedure
What is involved? The most effective treatment for the removal of varicose veins is surgery, although non-surgical and minimally invasive procedures are also available. Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is a non-surgical treatment for varicose veins that involves passing a probe into a vein to heat it up and seal it from within. The VNUS Closure Procedure involves a special tube being placed inside the affected vein, which is then heated up to seal the vein from within. This procedure can be performed under local anaesthetic, is usually less painful than alternative treatments and can promote faster recovery.
Paying for your cosmetic surgery
You can choose to pay for your own treatment at the Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital for most types of treatments, procedures and tests. If you’re staying overnight, you will have your own private room with en-suite bath and shower, as well as in-room entertainment facilities.
Of course, it is important to discuss your expectations with a consultant before you decide whether or not cosmetic surgery is right for you. To find out more about a procedure or to book an initial consultation, please contact The Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital.
