December's Singles Review

Matt Cardle – Starlight

With many of his fellow X-Factor victors going on to less than impressive careers, it seems vital that Matt Cardle makes an impact on the world of music with his debut album, Letters.

The album’s second single is an ever so slightly plodding, Snow Patrol-esque soft rock number, laden with soaring vocals and elegant guitars.

Cardle’s attempts at the grandiose fall a little flat, but Starlight still manages to be an encouraging, if hardly earth shattering release.

Coldplay – Charlie Brown

Coldplay demonstrated a capability for variety on their fifth album, Mylo Xyloto, released this year.

Although the group are often characterised more for their bleaker numbers, Charlie Brown is a resolutely upbeat track, infused with unabashed joy and verve.

Chris Martin’s delicate vocals give the song an air of genuine tenderness, despite its brash, jangly appearance.

The Only Way Is Essex – Last Christmas

Some of the talent on this Christmas themed single may be questionable, but it somehow manages to be more loveable than it has any right to be.

To their credit, the cover is far from a radical one and the spirit of the classic original largely remains.

If you are not a fan of the hit ITV show then there will be little here for you, but to those who harbour affection for the likes of Mark, Lydia and Arg, this will no doubt be an

entertaining festive treat, albeit one that may not stand up to repeat listens.

Foo Fighters - These Days

Dave Grohl has called These Days the best song that he has ever written – high praise indeed, especially coming from such a veteran of the music business.

These Days may not quite live up to it but remains a rousing, up-tempo stormer.

Grohl showcases a voice with more nuances than you might expect, with the chorus’ chunky guitars sure to thrill fans of the veteran rockers.
